ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction

Posted by bob in Comics, Films, News on July 22nd, 2008

ZMD 1ZMDs: Zombies of Mass Destruction a title from Red 5 Comics and written by Underworld’s Kevin Grevioux has been picked up by Benderspink for development as a feature film.

ZMDs: Zombies of Mass Destruction is a bit of a return to my horror roots,” said Grevioux in a release this spring. “Prior to creating this series, I was never really a big fan of zombies. But I came up with what I felt was an interesting twist on the genre and I’m thankful that [Red 5’s] Paul Ens and Scott Chitwood were open to the idea.”

The first of six bimonthly issues is being released this month and the website says the series is about:

“Air-dropped into the deadliest hot zones, the walking dead of ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction indiscriminately infect every last warring insurgent — on either side of the conflict. Specifically engineered to be photosensitive, once enemy infection becomes complete by dawn, both the originals and newly created zombies dissolve as a means to control widespread and accidental zombification. This allows live soldiers to enter and safely occupy the now-combatant-free territory. However, this plan takes a deadly turn when one of the U.S. zombies, dubbed — Zombie Zero — fails to dissolve at the expected time, and begins to wreak havoc in the Middle East by creating others like him. This leads the U.S. military brass to send in a special operative to quietly take out Zombie Zero and his minions before their existence becomes known to the rest of the world.”

This marks the second option the Canadian company has announced in recent weeks.  Previously they cut a deal with Toby Maguire’s Relativity shingle for their title Afterburn.

Badass Broken Girls vs. the Zombies

Posted by bob in Comics, News on July 19th, 2008

Broken GirlsAncient Squid Media will be offering up Broken Girls, a brand new graphic novel, due out in September for a measly $10.  What’s it about?  Co-writer Rob Beales told comicmonsters.com, “In a nutshell Broken Girls is badass schoolgirls fighting mutated hordes of blood-crazed lunatics.”

His partner, Cuitla Huezo, added, “The story takes place in a secret boarding school for the troubled, violent kids of influential families. The kind of place where they ship the worst of the worst – a dysfunctional high school, drug rehab, and mental hospital all rolled into one nightmarish facility.”

“The thing about this place is that it’s funded by drug corporations,” Beales finished. “The ‘students’ are just subjects of drug experiments as scientists try to find the next Ritalin or Prozac. Then things get out of control. A chemical spill spreads throughout the facility and causes every student, guard, and faculty member to mutate into complete psychopaths.”

The project was previewed at last summer’s Comic-Con International with art from Mike Ebert. The final art was provided by RAmado-IMedia Arts.

Review: Zombie Tales #1

Posted by bob in Comics, Reviews on May 27th, 2008

Zombie Tales #1 coverBOOM! Studios has been off to an impressive start with a wide array of subject matter and they have attracted a nice variety of talents. People seem to be finally catching on as some of their offerings have gained traction. Among them is Zombie Tales, which has previously been a miniseries. Tomorrow, the first issue of an ongoing monthly series launches.

The comic has three stories, one serial, two stand-alone and they are all good looking and well-written. It’s tough to find something new to say about a zombie attack or being a zombie so finding compelling stories will be tough and in all three cases, the writers have opted to focus on one or two main characters, making them the focal point and making the reader care.
