The X-Files: I Want to Believe will be released on DVD December 2nd. Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release the film in a single disc version ($29.98 SRP) a three-disc “The Ultimate X-Phile Edition” ($34.98 SRP) and on Blue-ray ($39.98 SRP). The Blu-ray edition will be Fox’s first release with BD-Live features. All three versions will be presented in widescreen (2.40:1 ratio) with English 5.1 Dolby Surround and Spanish/French Dolby Surround, with English and Spanish subtitles.
I was very excited about the return of the X-Files to the big screen. The idea that Chris Carter and his team were bringing the movie back to the stand alone, episodic format was a breath of fresh air after the last film in 1998, and the final few seasons where things became far to convoluted and out of whack. Then, I finally saw the film and instant disappointment set in. I wont review the picture here, but the fact that the show has been off the air for six years I Want to Believe was the best they could come up with-an uneven and overall flat story of modern day Frankenstein doctors, child molesting priests and a bearded Mulder-really disappointed me. Okay, Duchovny wore the beard well so that really didn’t bother me all that much. Apparently Fox is going all out with the DVD release. (more…)

For those who want to believe even more, word is spreading that 20th-Century Fox may not be done yet with Mulder and Scully. Bloody-Disgusting is quoting an unnamed source who reports:
“I understand - there was room for improvement … and there still might be. I work for Screaming Death Monkey and Spotnitz - the TERRIFIC Frank Spotnitz - told us this week that the team have already spoken about the next X-Files film. It’s likely the next release will go direct to DVD - but they’re working on the assumption they’ll have a similar budget.”

The Dark Knight continues to rule the box office as it takes the number one position for the fourth weekend in a row, the first time any 2008 release has achieved this. Its estimated haul of $26,030,000 pushes its domestic take to $441,541,000, faster than any movie in history.
In its second weekend Universal’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor dropped -60.2%, taking in just $16,113,000. With a total of $70,671,000, it chugs along although there has to be some concern that bad word of mouth, poor reviews and steep drop off may mean the franchise is running out of steam despite director Rob Cohen already talking a fourth film. Anthony Ferrante of ifMagazine spoke with X-Files producer Frank Spotnitz, talking about the film’s poor reception last weekend. The $30 million film will easily recoup its costs once foreign and ancillary sales are collected but still, the film underperformed analysts’ expectations by $7 million. He commented, “I try not to second-guess these things. I think everyone made the best decisions they could. It was a very tough situation, having a pretty small scale movie opening a week after one of the biggest movies of all time.”
Spotnitz also confirmed that the DVD edition, due out before year end, will contain additional material including a few excised scenes that rounded out some of the narrative. Additionally, there will be two versions. “Yes, the unrated version is, not surprisingly, more graphic than the theatrical version,” he said. “We’re not talking about tons of gore, but I have to say it is more upsetting than the PG-13 version.”

Opening this Friday, X-Files: I Want to Believe, is starting to really generate buzz as it has awaited its turn on the hit parade. This doesn’t stop people from anticipating the DVD release since 20th-Century Fox has indicated it will contain a “longer, more explicit, unrated, director’s cut”. The release date has not been announced but it’s a safe bet you can find it under your Christmas tree.

At WizardWorld Chicago, WildStorm announced several new titles which are right up our alley.
First, they have Gears of War, based on the video game and written by Joshua Ortega (Red Sonja). Ortega has been working on the game for years and knows this world inside and out. Liam Sharp will be providing the pulse-pounding artwork. At the panel, Editor Shannon Denton noted “My wife wishes I didn’t know so much about the game.”
Tying in to next month’s X-Files movie will be a comic that Denton described as more like Season 5 than directly tied to the movie. This would mark the property’s third publisher after Topps Comics and IDW each took a turn. The 40-page one-shot was written by the series’ Frank Spotnitz with art by Brian Denham.
Our pal Chuck Dixon is back with Storming Paradise, which is an alternate history of World War II, postulating what if the United States had chosen not to drop the nuclear bombs on Japan. Given the reality was that a massive invasion with estimates of millions of casualties on both sides, this could be a blood event.

The second X-Files feature title was revealed on CNN yesterday. Coming July 26, the title is X-Files: I Want to Believe.
Ryuhei Kitamura’s Midnight Meat Train has been all over the tracks this spring but now it seems to be not only keeping its original title, but will be scheduled to finally arrive in theaters August 1.
Parallel Media and producer Warren Zide have signed a $70 million deal to produce a series of films, including a horror offering currently titles Bat Out of Hell. No, it’s not based on the classic Meat Load album from 1977, but we don’t know what it is about. Masters of Horror scribes Drew McWeeny and Scott Swan will pen the script. A new entity, Parallel Zide will handle the distribution chores.
Gothic sci-fi thriller Source Code has been assigned by Universal Studios to director Shane Abbesdss (Gabriel). Written by Ben Ripley (Species III), the genre-crossing tale was at one time said to star Topher Grace (Spider-Man 3) but no casting has been formally announced.
