DreamWorks is in the process of acquiring the English language remake rights to Chan Wook-Park’s 2003 Korean Film Oldboy reports Variety. Universal Studios will distribute under this deal with Steven Spielberg to direct and Will Smith in early talks to star as the kidnapped man.
The original movie is hands down incredible. The story tells of “a man [who] gets kidnapped and held in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. Suddenly, he’s released and given money, a cell phone and clothes and is set on a path to discover who destroyed his life so he can take revenge.”
I don’t feel a remake is necessary, but Hollywood’s already got their mind on it. Spielberg is currently in search of a screenwriter to begin developing Oldboy while he finishes directing Tintin. At the very least, this will open more folks to the original movie.

At Comic-Con it was rumored that Warner Bros. had intentions to greenlight a production on a prequel to the 2007 blockbuster I Am Legend starring Will Smith. Variety confirmed today, Warner Bros. is moving forward with the project bringing Francis Lawrence back to direct a script currently being written by D.B. Weiss (The Game). Will Smith will also return to play Dr. Robert Neville. In addition, Smith and partner James Lassiter will co-produce the prequel under their Overbrook Entertainment banner with the original film’s producer Akiva Goldsman.
Smith, Goldman, Lassiter, and Lawrence, we were informed, had already outlined the script in detail before turning over the task for Weiss to pen. According to Variety, “The prequel will account for the final days of humanity in New York before a man-made virus caused a plague that wiped out the world’s population, leaving only Dr. Neville as the lone survivor among the mutated inhabitants.
The original 2007 blockbuster grossed $584 million in domestic and overseas sales. A sequel to the film was considered first, but the filmmakers decided it wouldn’t be possible. With Lawrence keeping a busy schedule, does this mean Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk’s Survivor will be reshelved in production limbo for much longer?
