On January 2, Universal Studios in Florida set sail on the final voyage of JAWS: THE RIDE. The attraction was an original feature dating back to when the theme park opened in 1990, famous for an interactive experience complete with a wet, shark attack grand finale. Most of the patrons on that final trip were fans who made their way to Florida to pay final tribute to what will go down as one of the most memorable theme park-movie tie-ins of all time.

Below you will find new pictures (courtesy the folks at The Shark Is Still Working, brought to your attention by Dread Central) of the attraction as it was being dismantled and removed. You will also find an amended theme park map sans JAWS, and a full length video of the ride experience.

West Coast fans of HARRY POTTER, rejoice: Butterbeer, the greatest, tastiest invention in the history of all mankind, is finally heading West!

But that’s only the tip of the iceberg. It was officially announced in a press conference yesterday that a HARRY POTTER-themed land would be coming to Universal Studios Hollywood, confirming months of internet speculation. Other than a brief mention of a recreation of Hogwarts Castle as the centerpiece of the land, no real concrete details were released about what to expect. Budget, location, rides and attractions, and opening date were not disclosed.

The move comes as no surprise given the popularity of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Universal Orlando’s Islands of Adventure theme park. That expansion increased overall park attendance 68%, so such an expansion seems like a no-brainer to bolster attendance on the West Coast.

California Governor Jerry Brown and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa each praised the move, citing its impact on the city’s economy and overall boost to the tourism industry. The creation of the park is expected to create about 1,000 jobs.

Being the horror buffs that we are, we can’t wait to see how such a ride would fit in with Universal’s epic yearly Halloween Horror Nights event. Hogwarts and Hogsmeade would seem to act as a perfect setting for some truly creepy moments.

And the Butterbeer. Oh, the Butterbeer. Worth an annual pass just so one can go in and drown in this creamy, butterscotchy concoction.

First the CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON musical, now this?! Universal’s recent attraction closures are sure to have monsters fans up in arms. Okay, maybe not so much with the CREATURE closure, but this one stings.

It was announced today that JAWS would be attacking guests of Universal Studios Orlando for the last time on January 2, 2012. Here’s the full announcement:

One wishes that they would give fans more than a month’s notice to see the shark one final time. No word on what’s going to be taking the iconic shark’s place at the theme parks, but the internet is brewing with rumors that it will either be the TRANSFORMERS attraction slated to open at Universal Hollywood this summer or some sort of expansion of the The Wizarding World of Harry Potter that’s been so popular with guests.

With only two weeks left to visit Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights, our thoughts are already turning to next year, wondering what the creators of the annual fright-fest will dream up next. To help them out, we’ve come up with a handy list of suggestions. Now, we understand that many movies might be tied up with copyright issues and various bureaucratic bric-a-brac, but setting those aside, these are scare zones that could be both inventive and absolutely terrifying. Some might be movies, others games, others just suggested people whose works one could draw from. But the one thing they all have in common is the ability to scare your eyes out your butt.

First off, let me just say for the record that it’s an absolute shame Trick ‘R Treat never received a true theatrical release. There is more intelligence in any one of its four short stories than the entirety of most horror movies that are released. That each vignette blends seamlessly with the others to serve a greater whole makes it that much better.

One could do any number of things with a Trick ‘R Treat haunted house. Sam, the “kid” wearing a sack on his head from the movie poster, would clearly be the mascot of the attraction. He would be used to carry the overarching theme, possibly as a transitional scare between the various sections of the haunted house. In one section a visitor traverses the house of serial killer Steven Wilkins, and Universal could use creative license to explore some more of Wilkins’ dark side that the viewers of the film didn’t get to see. From there, we step into the costume party gone horribly wrong in the woods, with limbs strewn about everywhere and werewolves attacking from all sides. A landfill section comes next, with the vengeful spirits of the deceased children from the school bus preying on innocent passers-by. Lots of cool effects provide a half-submerged, trash-heap feel to everything. The final section would be the coup-de-grace, Sackhead in all its glory, going beyond what we saw in the film to show the childlike being transform into a hideout beast as we progress through the final room.

Seriously, if Universal makes one haunted house from this list, it ought to be TRICK ‘R TREAT. But if they make two…

SILENT HILL

Either the videogame or the movie series, it matters not. SILENT HILL, especially for those who have played the games, is one of the most terrifying universes ever created. Survival horror taken to its extremes, the game thrusts the player into the role of some schmuck who finds him or herself in the most terrifying place on the planet. Many-limbed monstrosities chase you down without remorse, faceless nurses twitch after your helpless body with anything but healing on their mind, and skinless creatures descend from all corners to turn you into a whimpering mess.

SILENT HILL worked as well as it did because of the way it lured you into a false sense of security and then without warning tore that safety blanket away. The movie emulated this clever game technique, showing a city that, while not exactly a vacation destination, was still a city. When sirens pierce the quite of the ash-filled sky, though, hell literally breaks loose. The confines of a school, of a church, of a hospital, are suddenly burned away, leaving a festering pit of industrial decay behind, blood and viscera on the walls and abominations emerging from all angles to rip off your skin.

This could be put to great effect in a haunted house. Imagine traversing the corridors of a typical abandoned hospital scare zone, then you’re ushered into a large room, say a morgue. The sirens blare, the lights go off. Through some clever mechanical effects (currently available at many theme parks), when the lights come on your surroundings are converted into a hellish wasteland, perfect to usher you into the truly scary areas of the maze. This kind of haunted house would be hell itself come to life, and by basing a property off a game that has a movie adaptation, it opens the floodgates to other terrifying games in the horror genre just ripe for conversion into a haunted house.

Plus, Pyramid Head! The dude is tailor-made for a haunted house.

If he can fit that big honkin' noggin in the door

HELLBOY

Whether it be HELLBOY or one of his other directorial efforts, Guillermo del Toro is a filmmaker Universal needs to get to help create a scare zone that would be truly spectacular. The man is a horror visionary, and he and Universal have worked together in the past. HELLBOY, to me, seems to be the perfect fit. Del Toro has made it known that he could see the franchise continuing with Ron Perlman’s charming demon taking on the classic Universal Monsters, but until that happens, the universe is vivid enough to make a lighter, yet no less scary haunted house.

The whole thing could take place as an expo for the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, with stuff popping out at you while Hellboy’s makes clever japes from overhead speakers. It would all be very tongue-in-cheek. From the first movie, Universal could crib nothing less than the Chtuhlu mythos. Tentacles reaching out at guests, galaxy size squid monsters seen from a healthy distance. Rasputin pops up, as does that weird Nazi guy who requires a mechanical crank to get up and about to slaughter people.

From the second movie, any number of those twisted fairy tale creatures appear to scare visitors. Seedlings of the giant plant elemental that attacks New York sprout up and squirt guests with goop. The whole thing is capped off with a visit from The Golden Army itself. The technology might be expensive, but given the next-gen techniques currently on display over at Universal’s Harry Potter attraction in Florida, I think it’s quite doable.

And if not HELLBOY, then at least give us Pan’s Labyrinth. That thing with the eyes on its hands barreling down upon you? Pants-poopingly incredible.

THE HILLS HAVE EYES

This year’s Halloween Horror Nights felt like something was missing. In previous years, at least one haunted house was dedicated to some unstoppable slasher, be they of the Jason or the Freddy or the Leatherface or the Dave Coulier variety. This year, the closest thing to that was Ghostface, but he lacks a certain inbred panache.

The Full House Haunted House: "Cut. It. Out-- Your Heart That Is!"

Instead of going back to one of the old standbys, why not try something new and give us a haunted house based off of THE HILLS HAVE EYES? Both the original and the remake delivered gore and scares in equal abundance, and populated the rocky terrain of the American Southwest with a panoply of wonderful characters that could easily be translated to a haunted house setting.Whether it be the hulking Pluto or the ringleader Papa Jupiter, every creature in this movie would scare the living daylights out of passersby. On top of that, since the baddies are essentially human, you wouldn’t need state of the art technology to recreate some otherworldly monster, just a team of clever make-up designers.

Piece of cake!

The setting could also provide something we’ve yet to see at Horror Nights. The arid Southwest could be brought to vivid life in a sort of three act structure. The proceedings start near a broken down trailer in the desert night, and visitors watch the mutants prey on a helpless family. From there, we are ushered into the irradiated mine shafts where the mutants live and breed. The finale takes place in the Mutants’ atomic test grounds home, where the freakiest of the mutants take up residence and Pluto chases victims out into the rest of the attractions.

THE TWISTED WORLDS OF STEPHEN KING

Stephen King’s books are just begging to be co-opted into a haunted house format. There’ve already been more movies based off of his works than any other author, so a haunted house mash-up would be a logical next step. Considering that the Alice Cooper maze of this year was just a seemingly random collection of images from Cooper’s head, why not use a similar tactic with the works of King?

The possibilities are endless. In one scene visitors run terrified from the Clown from IT. The vampires from SALEM’S LOT swoop down from the rafters while the Slow Mutants from THE DARK TOWER emerge from the dark to claim you for their supper. It all leads up to a finale with the Crimson King threatening to to tear apart the heads of guests on his way to tearing apart the fabric of the universe. The whole thing would be overseen by the villainous Martin Flagg, the demonic presence who pops in and out of various King stories to orchestrate his horrific plans.

The prom scene from CARRIE, the beasts from THE MIST, even a scene where THE MANGLER has a victim in its jaws, King’s books are filled with any number of memorable moments that could be translated to scare zone form. Such a move would certainly bring new readers to King’s books as well as draw King’s fans who otherwise wouldn’t be caught dead (HA!) in a haunted house.

No Halloween is complete without an evil laundry folding machine

BONUS RIDE: SIMPSONS TREEHOUSE OF HORROR

Now that THE SIMPSONS RIDE has taken the place of BACK TO THE FUTURE, Universal has an E-ticket attraction they can run in tandem with Halloween Horror Nights. Such an attraction gives visitors a break from the constant moments of terror, but the current film that plays doesn’t really jibe with the rest of the horror going on at the park. For those that haven’t been on the attraction, THE SIMPSONS has guests board a ride simulator for a jaunt through Krustyland as Sideshow Bob tries to murder America’s favorite yellow family and you along with them. Awesome ride, just doesn’t fit with the whole Halloween theme.

Good thing Famous Monsters has a solution. The annual SIMPSONS TREEHOUSE OF HORROR episode is always a highlight of the the fall television season, and we think it provides the perfect opportunity for a Halloween time overlay of the ride, much like what Disney does with Space Mountain or the Haunted Mansion. The whole attraction could be decorated with trademark Simpsons references to Treehouse of Horror episodes past. Since the whole ride is a simulator, you wouldn’t even have to shut the ride down, just switch out the movie that plays.

Universal’s Krustyland queue already has posters for The Screamatorium of Dr. Frightmarestine, so why not let visitors explore that “ride” in the simulator and populate it with the Simpsons Halloween wit we’ve all come to know and love? Homer going mad from THE SHINNING, Maggie as an alien, Bart and Lisa on the run from the cannibalistic Principal Skinner and Edna Krabapple, Mr. Burns as Dracula, Groundskeeper Willie as Freddy Krueger, dolphins attacking the world! And to top it all off, the Zombie Flanders!

He was a zombie?

So there it is, a brief list of how Universal can blow all our minds in future incarnations of Halloween Horror Nights. There are many and more we could think up, but we’ll save those for next year. For now, this is all you’re gonna get.

You’re welcome, Universal.

In this companion piece to An Evening At The Eyegores, we at FM take you on a textual walkthrough of Universal Studios’ terrifying transformation into Halloween Horror Nights.

Every year Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights keep getting bigger and better as more and more bloodthirsty souls flock at Universal’s gates to get the living daylights scared out of them. This year the Terminator and WaterWorld theaters sat dark and empty as we said goodbye to the ROCKY HORROR tribute and SLAUGHTERWORLD, but new sections of the park sprang to life as the sun went down with the arrival of six haunting mazes and five terrifying “Scare Zones.”

Be warned, you’ll have to wait in an incredibly long line to get to go through any of the mazes, so try going on a Thursday or Sunday night to avoid the crowds – an idea Universal is trying to promote by offering discounts in an attempt to even out some of the Friday/Saturday crowd.

But for those of you true Horror fans (or at least Halloween fans) who have that “crowds be damned” attitude, fear not. Once you make it through the lines, Universal’s mazes will give you all the scares, blood, guts and gore you could ask for, and then some!

Alice Cooper: Welcome To My Nightmare — In honor of Cooper’s long-awaited sequel album “Welcome 2 My Nightmare,” Universal has branched out from their usual movie-themed mazes to take you deep into the depraved mind of the famous shock rocker. Taking you on a twisted trip through Cooper’s horror-filled discography, you will come face-to-face with a bone-saw wielding Dr. Alice, a stilt-walking Headmaster Alice and more guillotines, electric chairs, snakes, spiders and asylum halls than you can handle.

“We’ll be creating this living horror movie within screaming distance of the sound stages where horror movies first began, so there’s no place more appropriate to offer a preview of the new `Welcome 2 My Nightmare.’” Cooper said, “ This will be a nightmare that will haunt visitors’ dreams for a long time to come.”

Located on the lower lot, this is an incredibly popular attraction, so you’ll probably want to head for the escalators toward the beginning of your evening if you want to beat the rest of the horror-loving horde.

La Llorona: Villa De Almas Perdidas (The Weeping Woman: Village of Lost Souls) — This frightening maze is based on the Mexican legend of a deranged mother who is forced to wander the earth forever after she drowns her children and then herself. You may remember La Llorona from its appearance last year as one of the park’s “Scare Zones,” but it proved to be more confusing than scary to those who were unfamiliar with the legend’s back story and so this year it got an upgrade into one of the best attractions at the park.

From the stoic statues that will surprise you with every burst of black-lightning to the rotting pig carcasses hanging in the Carniceria to the grotesque La Llorona bursting through a bedroom window and feasting upon a young child, this maze is tactfully built and truly entertaining.

The Thing: Assimilation — Built to promote and accompany the upcoming thriller (THE THING… duh), this maze throws you in TheMiddleOfNowhere, Antarctica. There you will wander through a creepy research facility that has been overrun by an epidemic of shape-shifting alien parasites. Whether it was the elaborate creature costumes and intricate sets or just anticipation for the movie, this science-fiction nightmare landed near the top of my list for Horror Night’s successes.

Universal teamed up with Marc Abraham and Eric Newman, THE THING’s producers to create this chilling maze. “We want people to live the film and experience the same terror that affects the film’s characters,” said Newman. “Our collaboration with Universal’s creative teams brought the vision of the film to life.”

Eli Roth’s Hostel: Hunting Season – Get ready for possibly the goriest attraction at this year’s Horror Nights. Well executed, the Hostel maze proves to be one of the more immersive ones, starting right in the waiting line some Slovakian prostitutes chat you up and invite you inside the creepy building, hoping you don’t notice the torture chamber silhouettes in the upstairs window. Once inside, you are taken on a tour of the gruesome factory of death, complete with a carnage pile, barking dogs, and countless torturous death traps. Hostel is located on the lower lot as well, and will pick up some of the overflow from the Alice Cooper maze, so be sure to hit this one early as well.

Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses: In 3D ZombieVision — 3D ZombieVision! What is that? Chaos, that’s what it is. As you head into this maze you’ll enter Captain Spaulding’s Museum of Monsters and Madmen, where you will be forced to wander through the world’s most bizarre and deadliest tourist attraction. Full of more mayhem and carnage than you can shake your 3D glasses at, you won’t be disappointed by Mr. Zombie’s diabolical creation.

The Wolfman: The Curse of Talbot Hall — Last, and possibly least, we have the WOLFMAN maze. Based on the 2010 movie and set in Universal’s year-round haunted house building, this maze was fairly underwhelming. Due to the building’s normal function, there are a lot of built in features that don’t really make sense and it just doesn’t feel like you are making your way through Blackmoor Woods and into Talbot mansion. That being said, when you are lucky enough to have a Wolfman jump out and try to scare you, the masks and costumes look pretty darn fantastic.

Terror Tram: Scream 4 Your Life — With the mazes out of the way, we finally arrive at the Terror Tram. Usually taking you through the happy daytime attractions like Whoville and the enormous King Kong 3D tunnel, the tram instead takes you to the set of “Stab 8” where things don’t exactly go as planned and you are forced to dismount the tram and trek through Universal’s now-haunted backlot.

After being assaulted by some deformed goons with chainsaws, you head up to the Bates Motel – which has been infested with a gaggle of Ghostfaces out to kill you, or at least jump in your face and make you SCREAM. Then you head up to the Psycho house and finally to the WAR OF THE WORLDS plane crash set, which is now “Zombies on a Plane.” It’s an awful lot of walking for a “tram ride” but with all the scare-actors hiding around every corner and the opportunity to get up close and personal with some of Universal’s most famous sets, it is definitely a worthwhile experience.

In addition to the mazes and Terror Tram, the park also hosts five “Scare Zones” where terrifying “Scare-actors” – mutated Freakz, Grim Reapers, Zombies, Ghostfaces, and Klownz brandishing chainsaws – lurk in the foggy shadows, waiting to jump out at any unsuspecting guests that happen to wander by.

If that isn’t enough for you, you can party on with Bill & Ted’s Excellent Halloween Adventure or hop on one of the park’s other rides – The Simpsons Ride, Revenge of the Mummy, and Jurassic Park In The Dark – which will still be running throughout the night. All-in-all the event is a terrifying, worthwhile and memorable experience, so check it out!

Halloween Horror Nights will continue to run from 7pm to 2am on select dates as follows: October 7th, 8th, 9th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 27th, 28th, 29th, 30th, 31st.

It’s been busy over here at FM, what with the launch of our Graveyard Examiner and everything, but last weekend I promised more in-depth coverage of Universal’s Eyegore Awards, so here it is!

Upon entering Universal Studios’ Globe Theatre, there could be no doubt that you had just walked into a horror awards show. A quick glance around the room revealed an eclectic group of guests – eating a wide variety of delicious food – mingling among the eerily candlelit tables and surrounded by haunting rows of corn reminiscent of oh-so-many beloved horror flicks.

Now, allow me to digress for a moment. I’m afraid that when some of you were reading that last paragraph you may have been distracted by phrases like ‘eerie candlelight’ and ‘haunting rows of corn’ and skipped right over the quip about the amazing food. Even if the rest of the evening had been a total bust – which it was not – it would have been completely worth it due to the food alone. Trust me, Universal knows how to round up some spectacular grub. We’ll skip over the bar to save some time (you’ve seen one bar, you’ve seen them all), and dive right into the eats. The spread ranged from wonderfully crafted sandwiches to endless amounts of drool-inducing scallops, but the blue ribbon had to go to some of the best mashed potatoes one could ask for, topped with a succulent chunk of delicious pulled shortribs (and all of the orgasmic meat-juices that come with it!). If vegetarianism is your game, they also had superb caesar salads and some intriguing ‘Children of the Corn’ Chowder shooters. And for dessert we were presented with a dreamy assortment of cookies, cakes, brownies, these wonderful little apple crumble things and much, much more. But enough rambling on about amazing food you didn’t get to eat, let’s get to the stuff you actually came here to read about!

The lights flickered, signaling the time for things to get started had finally arrived, and everyone to turn their attention to the stage. Previous Eyegore winner and returning Eyegore MC Corey Feldman – decked out in dark, horror-inspired cloaks – hopped up on stage and took his place behind the podium. After humorously announcing that “every year they hope and pray that I come up with some material that’s funny, and one of these days, I will,” he and his sidekick, an obnoxious zombie scarecrow strung up in the rows of corn behind the stage, proceeded to warm up the crowd with a series of jokes and groan-inducing puns. After complimenting the zombie scarecrow on his remarkably white teeth, Feldman finally made the announcement that everyone should hope to hear at least once in their lifetime: “Ladies and Gentlemen please welcome to the stage, Mr. Thomas Jane!”

And with that the ball was rolling. Tom Jane (HUNG, THE MIST) took the stage and got right down to business.

“As his career has grown, so has his versatility and range. Moving effortlessly between drama and comedy, big budget block busters and small independent films, David knows that horror is his bread and butter... It is for this very reason that David has found a home in horror and why the first Eyegore award of the evening goes to David Arquette.”

Proudly holding his impish Eyegore Award, Arquette professed his gratitude and appreciation for his fans.

“I love horror fans. They truly support the things they love, they have a great sense of humor, and they’re a bunch of oddballs just like me. I was recently at Comic-Con and I was walking around and I saw all these zombies and weirdos and storm troopers and I was like ‘Why cant people just live their lives like this?’ And some people do and they’re the true horror fans. So thanks for having me, I really appreciate it.”

Next to the stage was the publisher of Variety, Brian Gott, who was there to present the next Eyegore to the young and talented Bailee Madison for her work in DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK.

“Through the course of a career, most performers would kill to work with the diverse actors such as Natalie Portman, Tobey Maguire, and Adam Sandler or to collaborate with accomplished directors like Andy Fickman, Tony Goldwyn and Jim Sheridan. Our next Eyegore recipient has accomplished all that and much more, and remarkably she’s done it before she’s even entered middle school.”

The adorable Bailee Madison took the podium and, displaying a calmness and presence of a woman far beyond her twelve years, she proceeded to deliver a heartfelt acceptance speech.

“I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Have a fantastic time tonight because I am so scared of anything scary, so for me Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark was nothing compared to Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights.” And ending with, “So I thank you so much, scream a lot for me and watch the clowns with chain saws!”

Feldman reclaimed the podium and, after complimenting Bailee on her ability to shriek and making a rather funny joke about it reminding him of divorce court, he introduced the next presenter, “basically everybody’s favorite guy in the room. The man, the myth, the legend. Rob Zombie!”

The well-known (and loved!) director was there to present the next Eyegore to none other than Rainn Wilson, whom Zombie described as “very tall, a little bit dorky, glasses, but with some spunk,” and, referencing his decision to turn Rainn into Fishboy in HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES, “You take one look at him and you think ‘I want to chop him in half and stick a fish body on him.’”

Rainn climbed on stage, in high spirits and clearly having a fun time at such an event, commenting on how he never in a million years thought that he would be receiving an Eyegore award and jokingly asking the audience, “Has anyone in this room seen a movie that doesn’t involve like a cheerleader getting shot in the face with a shotgun? Do you guys even know who Katherine Heigl is!?” Still bringing the funny, he went on to describe Rob Zombie as “a very demanding director. If he doesn’t get the performance he expects from you… he’ll murder your entire family,” and ended by admitting his appreciation for people who come up to him on the street and recognize him as Fishboy rather than paper salesman/beet farmer Dwight Shrute.

Next up, Calico Cooper presented and accepted the award for her father, the great Alice Cooper, who couldn’t attend the event since he is once again on tour supporting his newest album. The legendary rocker did however give a nice little acceptance speech via a pre-recorded video.

“This is really quite an important thing for me because this is where the Wolfman was born. This is where Frankenstein, Dracula, and all the classics were born and now I am in that same class. Well not really, but i try to do my best. Thanks again.”

SLITHER writer/director James Gunn presented the next award to funny-man Jamie Kennedy, known in the horror circuit for playing Randy Meeks in the SCREAM franchise. Admitting himself that he was “desperate for stage time,” Jaime’s acceptance speech ran more like a stand up comedy segment, starting with, “A lot of people are upset that I died in Scream 2… A lot of people wish that I died in Son Of The Mask 2,” moving on to his thoughts on the Twilight Saga… “Give it up for Feldman, a real legend right here. He was in Lost Boys. That’s when vampires were scary. Now what do we have? We have Edward. So many girls are like ‘Why cant you be like Edward? He’s such a man.’ Really? He’s such a man? Okay, let’s review. He looks like an androgynous supermodel, he can fly, and he sparkles when you put him in the sunlight. Any guy with those traits isn’t looking for you, ladies. He’s looking for your brother. And he doesn’t want to suck his blood. He wants to drain another vein.” And ending with, “Much love to you. God bless you. Horror fans are the best and I know that if I get nothing else in my life I can always go down to San Diego and sell 8x10s!”

The last Eyegore of the evening was presented by writer/director Adam Green (HATCHET, FROZEN) to the lovely Emma Bell (FROZEN, THE WALKING DEAD, FINAL DESTINATION 5). Green raved about Bell’s work ethic – so enthusiastically that he even dropped a few F-bombs – and went on to compliment her by saying, “If i could buy stock in another human being, I would buy it in this young woman.”

As Bell graciously accepted her award, she expressed how proud she was to be thought of in the same group as the other Eyegore winners.

“I don’t know that it’s fair to put me last because all of the people who were up here before me, I just don’t think i can compare to. I’m so honored and thankful to this whole community. I’ve had such a wonderful run. I’m really really grateful, and thank you to everybody who loves horror as much as we all do.”

To conclude the evening, John Murdy (the Creative Director of Halloween Horror Nights) and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (star of the upcoming THE THING) presented a $1000 cash prize to the winner of the Halloween Horror Nights Short Film Competition, filmmaker Brent Bokovoy, for his film MONSTER IN MY SWIMMING POOL!

With all of the awards out of the way, Feldman took the podium for the last time to give us the announcement we had all been waiting for…

“Gee, this award show has gotten a little long, and endearing still, but i think its time for us to now go and venture out into the park!” And that is just what we did…

…To be continued in A Walk Through Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights!

Last night, Universal Studios celebrated the opening of its Halloween Horror Nights with the Eyegore Awards – the annual ceremony which honors the creme de la creme of the horror genre.

Emceed by Corey Feldman, the evening brought us appearances by Rob Zombie, Thomas Jane, James Gunn, Adam Green, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Calico Cooper, and Brian Gott (the Publisher of Variety) as this year’s batch of Eyegore Awards were presented to the HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES star Rainn Wilson, SCREAM stars David Arquette and Jamie Kennedy, DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK star Bailee Madison, FROZEN star Emma Bell, and the great Alice Cooper.

The Eyegore’s weren’t the only excitement of the evening, though. Chainsaws revved throughout the night as blood-covered clowns roamed Universal, terrorizing guests as they made their way to the park’s six screamtacular mazes (The Thing: Assimilation, Eli Roth’s Hostel: Hunting Season, Alice Cooper: Welcome to My Nightmare, Rob Zombie’s House of 1,000 Corpses, La Llorona: Villa De Almas Perdidas, The Wolfman: The Curse of Talbot Hall) as well as the park’s Five “Scare Zones,” the Terror Tram: Scream 4 Your Life, and Bill & Ted’s Excellent Halloween Adventure.

Halloween Horror Nights will continue to run from 7pm to 2am on select dates as follows: September 24th and 30th. October 1st, 7th, 8th, 9th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 27th, 28th, 29th, 30th, 31st.

Famous Monsters will be delivering more in depth coverage of the Eyegore Awards and the Halloween Horror Nights throughout the week, so be sure to keep checking in every day for more tasty tidbits!

Sam Worthington is in talks to play Dracula for Universal, in Alex Proyas' upcoming Dracula: Year Zero.

Latino Review reported, and The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed, that Sam Worthington is in talks to play Dracula for Universal, in Alex Proyas’ upcoming Dracula: Year Zero.

The fate of Year Zero is in flux right along with every other tentpole the Big U is considering for 2011. According to the Latino Review’s source:

…Universal has been stagnant since they got sold to that Cable company Comcast. They haven’t been allowed to go to the toilet without a permission slip. And now they realize they need to make 8 big films for 2011. You see it takes at least a year to make a moving picture- and they don’t have enough for next year.

So there are 14 possible films with 8 needed. And they need to figure out what the freak they are doing quickly.

Each of the possible 14 are ready to go with scripts and directors. Some of them you know and some of them you don’t…

As Avatar cruises past Titanic‘s box office milestones, Worthington’s casting would bump the project up considerably. Worthington will next be seen in Warner Brothers’ Clash of the Titans, opening March 26.
