Alice Update: First Look Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter/ Alice Shot in 2D?!

Posted by dominie in Films, News on November 18th, 2008

Just Jared revealed a frightening first look at Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. The photo is not official and we’re skeptical this may be the result of some fan art. Nevertheless, we present the photo.

Filmonic received news that although Burton’s Alice in Wonderland is in 3D, they are actually shooting the project on regular 2D, then converting the files into 3D! Read on for the full details.

From Marketsaw, “Jim here. Well this is a surprise to say the least! I knew it was strange that in the original ALICE IN WONDERLAND set photos that came up from England during the early days of shooting there were NO cameras set up in 3D configuration - just standard 2D setups. But I assumed that the shooting was preliminary and was merely being used to set the stage as it were for the stereographic professionals to take over.”

“Wrong. I just got word from a source in a position to know (first time source - but seems very trustworthy) that Tim Burton is NOT shooting AIW in 3D at all. Period. They intend on converting to 2D movie to 3D after the fact in post production!”

Three More Join in Burton’s Wonderland

Posted by dominie in Films, News on October 27th, 2008

Christopher Lee (Star Wars, Lord of the Rings) and Eleanor Tomlinson (Angus,Thongs and Perfect Snogging) have joined the cast of Tim Burton’s live-action-performance-capture-combo adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, of which Danny Elfman has now been confirmed to be scoring the music for.

/Film reports that Lee’s role has not been revealed, but the likely contending roles are The Caterpillar, King of Hearts, or The White Knight. The choice is not unusual. Lee has partnered with Burton in numerous prior films: Sleepy Hallow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, and was even originally scheduled to play a part in Sweeney Todd before his character was cut out during pre-production.

Tomlinson has  been cast for a special part unique to Burton’s adaptation. “Eleanor will play Alice’s peer, the spiteful Fiona Chataway, who appears at the beginning of the film before Alice falls down the rabbit hole.”

Wacky Casting

Crispin Glover is the latest casting addition to Tim Burtons re-imagining of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Everyone’s favorite Back to the Future father is set to play the Knave of Hearts, who is put on trial for stealing the Queen of Hearts tarts and is defended by Alice.

Glover joins Mia Wasikowska as Alice, Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, and Matt Lucas among others in the live action/performance capture film set for a March 2010 release.

Glover, known for his eccentric characterizations and overall wackiness seems the perfect fit for any Tim Burton movie, and the internet is abuzz with anticipation over the coming collaboration. Glover is no stranger to motion capture; he performed as the creature Grendel in the Robert Zemeckis 2007 version of Beowulf.

Tim Burton Talks Alice, Dark Shadows

Posted by dominic in Films, News on October 17th, 2008

As it turns out Tim Burton isn’t a big fan of Disney’s Alice in Wonderland. Taking some time to talk to The Los Angeles Times Mr. Burton had this to say about his version of the film:

“It’s a funny project. The story is obviously a classic with iconic images and ideas and thoughts. But with all the movie versions, well, I’ve just never seen one that really had any impact to me. It’s always just a series of weird events. Every character is strange and she’s just kind of wandering through all of the encounters as just a sort of observer. The goal is to try to make it an engaging movie where you get some of the psychology and kind of bring a freshness but also keep the classic nature of ‘Alice.’ And, you know, getting to do it in 3-D fits the material quite well. So I’m excited about making it a new version but also have the elements that people expect when they think of the material.”

When asked about frequent collaborator Johnny Depp’s role as the Mad Hatter he responded, “He doesn’t like to be the same way twice. That’s good, it always keeps it fresh and all. And he likes the material we have here and he gets it. It’s nice to have people involved that are fans of the material and all.”

Expect the new Alice to possess the quirky fantastical elements expected of a Tim Burton film. Not being a particularly large fan of Alice and Wonderland I will be looking forward to seeing what he does with the material. I can only hope he doesn’t ruin it like he did Sleepy Hollow or Planet of the Apes. One thing is for certain, visually the film will look amazing.

As for the Dark Shadows fans in the audience there’s a hint of possibility on the horizon, albeit in movie talk aloofness. “Oh I don’t know. Take one at time, you know? It’s something I’m interested in of course. Definitely. But I’m going to start shooting this one first!” As a fan I can only hope the Dark Shadows movie doesn’t get lost down the rabbit hole? P.S. Guess who is rumored to star as Barnabus Collins? None other than Johnny Depp.

Creepy Casting: More Alice in Wonderland

Posted by dominie in Films, News on October 8th, 2008

It was 1985 and I counted the eternal days until the television broadcast of Alice and Wonderland.   Airing just before Christmas and boasting a cast that included Scott Baio this event was a close second to meeting the actual Santa Claus.  The two part miniseries was just dark enough to peak my interest, though delicately skirted the kind of fear that would rob me of sleep in those precious formative years.  Twenty three years later, I could not be more thrilled that Tim Burton has signed on to direct Disney’s live action and CGI version of the classic tale.

Burton has secured a stellar ensemble of actors through the years and I am not surprised that Anne Hathaway has been chosen to play the benevolent White Queen; quite a juxtaposition to Helena Bonham Carter’s fiery Queen of Hearts. Hathaway has proven herself elegant (Becoming Jane), humorous (The Devil Wears Prada) and even conquered gritty (Havoc and Rachel Getting Married).  Clearly, she has the acting chops to tackle any role put before her.  The verdict isn’t out whether she will be seen as a live action character or in performance capture mode.  Regardless, Hathaway is no longer just a princess, she will traverse Carroll’s tale as queen.

Burton is no stranger to unpacking the iniquitous aspects of a story and Alice in Wonderland is a veritable goldmine.  I say “off with their heads!”  Make it as sinister and edgy as you want, Tim.  I’m a big girl now!

Creepy Casting: Burton’s Alice in Wonderland 3-D

Posted by dominie in Films, News on October 1st, 2008

Underworld star Michael Sheen (Variety) and Shaun of the Dead and Little Britain actor Matt Lucas (Slashfilm) has joined the cast of Tim Burton’s 3-D adaptation of Lewis Caroll’s Alice in Wonderland.

Currently Johnny Depp has secured the role of Mad Hatter and Mia Wasikowska is playing Alice.  No word on Sheen’s character to date, but Lucas on the other hand is rumored to be playing both Tweedledee and Tweedledum.  Sifymovies however, reports that Lucas’ Little Britain partner David Walliams may take on one of the roles.

Also worth mentioning are Burton’s baby (unnamed) and partner Helena Bonham Carter may play a role in the film as well.  Alice in Wonderland in 3-D hits theaters March 10, 2010.

Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland First Look

Posted by dominie in Films, News on September 29th, 2008

The first photos from the set of Tim Burton’s screen adaptation of Alice in Wonderland surfaced online at INF Daily.  Filming is currently taking place in Cornwall, England.  The pictures don’t tell much, but they do show Mia Wasikowska (I Love Sarah Jane, TV’s In Treatment), an Australian actress who is playing the role of Alice, in costume on a big ship.  Also on set was Burton’s wife Helena Bonham Carter with their baby who was dressed up in what looks like period garment for the film.

Again, Johnny Depp will play the Mad Hatter in Burton’s new rendition (I’m imagining way freaky already) scheduled to hit theaters in 2010.  It will be quite a wait, but the final picture, a mix of live-action and motion-capture animation, looks like it will be great!

Johnny Depp is the Man

Posted by dominie in Films, News on September 27th, 2008

Speaking of Johnny Depp and Tim Burton, fans are rejoicing at news that the pair will be teaming up again in Burton’s adaptation of Disney’s classic Alice in Wonderland. The announcement was made last week before a boisterous crowd in Hollywood at the Walt Disney Showcase that sampled the studio’s productions to come in 2009 through 2011.  Depp will play the Mad Hatter (a perfectly befitting role that will allow Depp to go “full retarded”) in this rendition which Burton plans to utilize a combination of 3D animation and a similar performance capture technology like that used for 2007’s Beowulf.  As fans, there is much to look forward to now! Burton’s creations of which Depp has been involved in, in fact, mark the milestone films of Depp’s career. 1990 blockbuster, Edward Scissorhands? 2005’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?

And that’s not it for Johnny Depp.  The 45-year old actor will also reprise his role as the infamous Captain Jack Sparrow in the fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, reports Variety, which has grossed more than 2.6 billion since its first installment released in 2003. Wait, there’s more. Depp will continue to collaborate with Jerry Bruckheimer, starring as Tonto, the Native American sidekick in Bruckheimer’s new version of the Lone Ranger.
