It was a huge holiday weekend at the box office. With quite a few high profile films opening over the long Christmas weekend Hollywood saw a significant jump from the previous two weekends. The top twelve grossing films combined for a total of $182.5 million.
The top four films were all new releases. Starting with the Fox released Marley and Me starring Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston. The film took in $37 million over the weekend and $51 million since opening Christmas Day, with an on site average of $10,632.
Adam Sandler’s Bedtime Stories, released by Buena Vista grossed $28.1 million for the second spot, raising its four day total to $38.5 million.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, starring Bard Pitt debut in the number three spot with a cool $27 million. The Paramount release, based on a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald has grossed slightly over $39 million in four days.
The Bryan Singer directed, Tom Cruise lead World War II film Valkyrie grossed $21.5 million for fourth place, averaging $7,942 per screen and a four day total of a little over $30 million.
Dropping from first to fifth was Yes Man, starring Jim Carrey. The Warner Brothers release scored $16.5 million over the weekend raising its two week total to $49.5 million.
Seven Pounds dropped to sixth place with $13.4 million. The Sony release has grossed $39 million in two weeks, a little weak for a Will Smith movie no doubt owing to the more serious subject matter, of which I know nothing about.
The Tale of Despereaux, the animated Universal release moused its way into seventh place with $9.4 million.
Keanu Reeves, Gort and The Day the Earth Stood Still snatched $7.9 million and eighth place. Down from fourth place the Fox release has made $63.6 million in three weeks.
Debuting with a ghostly $6.5 million was Frank Millers The Spirit. At ninth place the Lionsgate release has grossed $10.3 million since opening on Thursday.
And the critically acclaimed play turned movie Doubt rounds out the top ten with $5.7 million on 1,267 screens. The Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman religious drama has made $8.8 million in three weeks.
Also of note, Paramount Vantage’s Revolutionary Road, which reunites Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, grossed an impressive $192,000 on just three theatres for an onsite average of $64,000.
See you carzy kids next week.

We fell behind on this one, but here’s a look at the final one-sheet for Frank Miller’s The Spirit. Opening on Christmas Day 2008, it’s only one month away!
Synopsis: Adapted from the legendary comic strip, THE SPIRIT is a classic action-adventure-romance told by genre-twister FRANK MILLER (creator of 300 and SIN CITY). It is the story of a former rookie cop who returns mysteriously from the dead as the SPIRIT (Gabriel Macht) to fight crime from the shadows of Central City.
His arch-enemy, the OCTOPUS (Samuel L. Jackson) has a different mission: he’s going to wipe out Spirit’s beloved city as he pursues his own version of immortality. The Spirit tracks this cold-hearted killer from Central City’s rundown warehouses, to the damp catacombs, to the windswept waterfront … all the while facing a bevy of beautiful women who either want to seduce, love or kill our masked crusader. Surrounding him at every turn are ELLEN DOLAN (Sarah Paulson), the whip-smart girl-next-door; SILKEN FLOSS (Scarlett Johansson), a punk secretary and frigid vixen; PLASTER OF PARIS (Paz Vega), a murderous French nightclub dancer; LORELEI (Jaime King), a phantom siren; and MORGENSTERN (Stana Katic), a sexy young cop.
Then of course, there’s SAND SAREF (Eva Mendes), the jewel thief with dangerous curves. She’s the love of his life turned bad. Will he save her or will she kill him?
In the vein of BATMAN BEGINS and SIN CITY, THE SPIRIT takes us on a sinister, gut-wrenching ride with a hero who is born, murdered and born again.

A new poster for Frank Miller’s (300, Sin City) The Spirit has just surfaced on First Showing; the best one yet in my opinion. The film, written and directed by Miller based on Will Eisner’s comic strip of the same name, is set to open from Lionsgate on December 25, Christmas Day. Miller’s adaptation will tell the story of a man, Denny Colt (played by Gabriel Macht) who fakes his own death to fight crime from the shadows of Central City.
A synopsis from IMDB:
Down these mean streets a man must come. A hero born, murdered, and born again. When a Rookie cop named Denny Colt returns from the beyond as The Spirit, a hero whose mission is to fight against the bad forces from the shadows of Central City. The Octopus who kills anyone unfortunate enough to see his face who has other plans. He’s going to wipe out the entire city. The Spirit tracks this cold hearted killer from the city’s rundown warehouses, to the damp catacombs, to the windswept waterfront all the while facing a bevy of beautiful women who either want to seduce, love or kill the masked crusader.
