Well, what do you know? Hammer Films is back in business. And to think, the last time they produced a film my parents weren’t yet divorced. Wait, my parents weren’t even married. In fact, they hadn’t even met. So, I guess, the last time Hammer Films produced a movie, I was not alive…and I’m almost 30!
The Wake Wood, directed by David Keating (The Last of the High Kings), written and produced by Brendan McCarthy and starring Aidan Gillen (The Wire), Eva Birthistle (Breakfast on Pluto), Ella Connolly and Timothy Spall (the guy who informs Tom Cruise that his nickname is “Citizen Dildo” in Vanilla Sky), tells the tale of a couple who moves to the town of Wake Wood to start anew after the loss of their daughter. Set in a cold, rainy, dreary Ireland, Wake Wood feels to be a common enough horror/supernatural story. But who cares if the film is good? I’m just happy that Hammer Films is back to putting “nails in the coffin.” (Yikes, that was a bad pun)
Now, let’s tangent: Writer/producer Brendan McCarthy obviously cast Birthistle as the female lead in his film. He also cast Eva in another movie he exec. produced called Breakfast on Pluto (which is an amazing movie starring Cillian Murphy). What I find interesting and really cool is that producers and/or directors use the same actors again and again. Cillian Murphy, as an example, is a Danny Boyle regular starring in both 28 Days Later and the fabulous Sunshine. D.J. Caruso’s new film Eagle Eye is the second film Shia LaBeouf has starred in. And let’s not forget the greatest director/actor relationship of all: Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. I don’t know why I find these loyal affairs to be so gratifying. Maybe it’s because the film industry is such a savage and fickle business that it’s nice to see constants in all the chaos. I guess it brings hope into the equation. Something that is easily lost in the grind of everyday life. So, let’s have a couple of cheers for the faithful ones. And let’s have a cheer for McCarthy and Birthistle.

CW’s Supernatural returns September 18 and fans got a glimpse of the first five minutes of the opening episode. The biggest news was that Mitch Pileggi (X-Files) will join the cast as Sam and Dean’s grandfather.
The show was said to be finite, running at most five seasons, and if true, would therefore end its run in May 2010.
Pileggi will be first seen in a flashback episode which also provide a glimpse of the heroes’ parents.
Story wise, the series will delve deeper into its own mythology than in the first three seasons.

Supernatural executive producer Eric Kripke has been signed a new two year deal at Warner Bros. He will generate new projects for the studio in addition to watching over the fourth season of the series. Whether or not he will be involved in the much rumored Old West prequel spinoff series is unknown.
At Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors, director Ruggero Deodato discussed his sequel to Cannibals, Cannibal Holocaust. The script is now complete with production anticipated to start in September. He also mentioned he and the producer still need to hash out one final creative sticking point which may threaten the start of principal photography.
Spider-Man 4 currently without an approved script, director, or confirmed cast, has been pencilled in for a May 2011 release date according to the Los Angeles Times. This puts out in between April 30’s Captain America and July’s Avengers projects which Marvel previously announced. Is that too much too soon?

The paranormal is a popular topic in fiction these days so its little wonder one network after another is exploring the subject. AMC, which has increased its original programming, has picked up Darren Aronofsky’s (The Fountain) Riverview Towers, a series that follows a family that moves into a new apartment. The pilot script is being handled by John J. McLaughlin (Black Swan) with Aronofsky executive producing with partners Eric Watson and Jed Weintrob. Should AMC buy the script, Pat Jenkins (Monster) is set to direct. The project started as a pitch to HBO two years back but didn’t catch on.

The CW announced on Monday that Supernatural will be back in the Fall for a fourth season. The series has built a strong fan base and with other series on the network showing their age, they need shows that can deliver consistent audiences.
No word yet on the charming Reaper but in defiance of all logic Smallville will be back for an eighth season. Michael Rosenbaum, who plays Lex Luthor, previously announced his intentions to leave the series after the current strike-shortened season. What will happen to the Clark/Lex duality has yet to be announced.
Supernatural meantime has spawned some wonderful novels and comic books from DC Comics and should be around for a while.
News Bits & Pieces
We recently reported that Ellen Page pulled out of Sam Raimi’s return to horror. Now we see that the underrated Alison Lohman will replace her. We’re still chuffed about this project.

Jim Marquand will direct episodes of George Lucas’ still-in-development Star Wars television series. He is the son of Return of the Jedi director Richard Marquand.
Speaking of Lucas, no surprise here that a new box set of the Indiana Jones trilogy will be released May 13, just before the fourth installment hits the big screen.
Speaking of Harrison Ford, his Crossing Over film has been scheduled by the Weinstein Company for August 22.
The live action Dragonball has been bumped from August until April 3, 2009.
The unnecessary remake of Escape to Witch Mountain, Race to Witch Mountain has added Ciaran Hinds (Stop Loss) and Alexander Ludwig (The Seeker: The Dark is Rising) to the cast which already features Dwayne Johnson (The Scorpion King) and AnnaSophia Robb (Jumper). The Andy Dickman film begins production this month.
New parents Move into House
Monica Potter (Along Came a Spider) and Tony Goldwyn (Ghost) will be playing the parents in the remake of Wes Craven’s classic Last House on the Left. Craven is producing the film with Dennis Iliadas directing.
The original, one of the first graphic horror films of the current generation, was released in 1972 with a No Name cast (Martin Kove of Karate Kid fame is about the only familiar name from the cast list) and became a template fro many imitators. By putting recognizable names in key roles already makes this an interesting project to follow.
NBC’s Fear Itself Details Released

Recently, NBC released the names of several directors as well as some of the cast although the match-ups of star to helmer remain under wraps. The series is being produced on the cheap in Canada with production already underway, carefully supervised by Adam Goldworm, the series producer, repeating his Masters experience.
