The LA TIMES reports that Lions Gate Entertainment has officially purchased TWILIGHT studio Summit Entertainment for $412.5 million.

The final film in Stephanie Meyer’s series, THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN PART 2, hits theaters next November. But according to LionsGate Chief Executive Officer, John Feltheimer, it might not be the end of the franchise. “I’m anticipating ‘Breaking Dawn Part 2′ being $700 million-plus in worldwide box office.”

In talks of keeping the property alive, when asked specifically about bring TWILIGHT to the small screen, Feltheimer said, “I certainly hope so.”

At least, that’s what the producers of THE DARKEST HOUR are hoping.  The film, starring Emile Hirsch, opens on December 25, and follows a group of people struggling to survive in Russia after a devastating alien invasion (a reverse RED DAWN, perhaps?).  Summit Entertainment has just released the following one sheet to promote that very festive release date, courtesy of Yahoo Movies.

Get ready to push Grandma out the door immediately after Christmas dessert, because you’ve got a date with an alien invasion horror flick at the multiplex.

Forget the rumors of Nolan, Bay and Cuarón. Variety reports that the new Warner Bros THE TWILIGHT ZONE feature will be helmed by Matt Reeves. Director of CLOVERFIELD and LET ME IN, Reeves has a lot of upcoming work on his plate in addition to the new ZONE flick.

Reeves is attached to direct THE DARK ENDEAVOR, a take on the Frankenstein tale for Summit Entertainment; a THE PASSAGE, an adaptation of the Justin Cronin vampire novel for Fox 2000; and 8 O’CLOCK IN THE MORNING for Universal, in which a man awakes to an alien controlled society. With all these projects underfoot, it’s hard to imagine when Reeves will squeeze in time for THE TWILIGHT ZONE.

Warner Bros and Leonardo DiCaprio are looking to produce this new TWILIGHT ZONE movie as a single stand-alone narrative as opposed to an anthology with multiple tales and directors like the 1983 version. The film is expected to have a strong emphasis on themes used in the original Rod Serling TV series.

Summit Entertainment has released the above motion poster for the upcoming science fiction film, THE DARKEST HOUR.

The movie follows the struggle of five young adults who are stranded in Moscow after a worldwide attack on the planet by a race of violent, energy-craving, invisible aliens who – as the motion poster shows – have no regard for human life.

Directed by Chris Gorak and written by Jon Spaights, THE DARKES HOUR stars Emile Hirsch, Olivia Thirlby, Max Minghella, Rachael Taylor, Dato Bakhtadze and Pyotr Fyodorov.

Red tells the tale of a former black-ops agent (Bruce Willis) who has to fight to survive when younger, gadget wielding assassins show up to kill him.

If the negotiations go through, and I hope they will, Reilly would play a paranoid, retired CIA agent and Parker would play the film’s romantic interest.

Personally, I think this would be awesome. John C. Reilly has had his ups and downs, but he is a great performer and he could definitely do a great job playing a crazy ex-agent paranoid of everything and everyone around him.  I also love Mary-Louise Parker’s work with Weeds and would love to see her in more big screen roles. Here’s to hoping!

The fourth and final film in the “Twilight” teen vampire series is in the works, TheWrap has learned.

It also means that the obsessive fan base of the movies can expect to revel in no fewer than three full-length “Twilight Saga” films — going from November of this year through the end of 2010.

But a Summit executive who declined to be identified said that there was no production schedule for “Breaking Dawn,” and no current plans to shoot in Vancouver.

In mid-March, the cast and crew were spotted by locals filming under the title “Unnamed Sports Movie,” at Tofino, the surfing hot spot at the far northern tip of nearby Vancouver Island.

Dakota Fanning plays Jane, a high ranking and powerful Volturi member and Cameron Bright is Alec, her brother. Noot Seer plays Volturi member Heidi. Michael Sheen plays Aro, the Volturi leader. Graham Greene appears as Harry Clearwater, Quileute tribal leader and old friend of Bella’s father Charlie. Tinsel Korey is Emily, the fiancé of Sam Uley.

“Michael’s role is so important because he’s the head of all vampires, Weitz said. “Aro is, on the surface, a very gracious and friendly vampire, but beneath that he is a tremendous threat.”

Jamie Campbell-Bower will star alongside Dakota Fanning as Caius, the most powerful of vampires, the Volturi’s leader. Caius will play a key role in the plot of New Moon by exercising their power to decide in Bella’s fate—a fact that will never be looked lightly upon in the book hereafter. Noot Seear will play the Volturi’s housewifey, or “fisher,” the bait to draw humans to the Volturi to eat.

In other news, Sony Screen Gem’s western horror Priest adaptation has been in negotiations to reel in Paul Bettany (The Da Vinci Code, Gangster No. 1) for their warrior priest. According to BD, Scott Stewart (Legion) will direct the Michael De Luca and Stars Road Entertainment production.

Priest is set in a world ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampire and follows a warrior priest (Bettany) who turns against the church to track down a murderous band of vampires who have kidnapped his niece.

The project will be the second collaboration between Stewart and Bettany after Legion. The screenplay was written by Cory Goodman (The Brood), and Sony Screen Gems has slated the picture for release on August 13, 2010. Stay tuned for updates!
