Caprica Gets Greenlight, Sci-Fi Reveals Details

Posted by dominie in Films, News on December 3rd, 2008

The Sci-Fi Channel has officially greenlit Caprica, the hotly anticipated prequel to the Battlestar Galactica series. Production begins in the middle of next year, most likely in Vancouver like is predecessor, and the studio is aiming for an early 2010 bow for the series.

Sci-Fi Channel’s president David Howe tells Variety, “Battlestar Galactica was absolutely our flagship show. It put us on he map and helped transform the perception of the network,” noting that the cabler hopes to draw a broader audience to a series it sees as more compelling family drama than “space opera.”

He continues, “We want people to come to this who have never heard of Battlestar Galacica. I think, because (Galactica’s) backdrop was space and spaceships, there was a barrier to entry for some viewers. Caprica has none of that. It’s an intense family drama set on an Earthlike planet, in the near future [50 years prior to Galactica’s initial attack. Caprica will speak] to a lot of the ethical dilemmas that we as a human race are going to have to face very shortly.”

Caprica will premiere on Sci-Fi Channel as a 2-hour pilot and stars Esai Morales as Joseph Adama, William Adama’s father, Eric Stoltz and Paula Malcolmson as the wealthy capitalist parents of Zoe Graystone’s, and Polly Walker, the headmistress at Zoe Graystone’s school. Review:Flu Bird Horror (2008)

Posted by phillip in Reviews on September 22nd, 2008

Once in a great while, a movie is made that defies all odds. Poor production value, foreign locations that look like foreign locations, and bad acting. Yet it somehow gels together to make a masterpiece. Well this is one of them.

Flu Bird Horror is about a group of juvenile delinquents that are at a reform camp which happens to get attacked by pterodactyl looking-like things. Did you know that The Avian flu can morph ordinary pigeons into dinosaurs? Me neither. Any whooty…these delinquents get picked off one by one in the forest as the local ranger (Lance Guest, Last Starfighter, Holloween 2) desperately looks for these kids. At least its original.

Like a fine crafted Matrushka Doll, Flu Bird Horror (ah-chooooo, Gazuntight!) is truly a horror within a horror within a horror. The first horror is that it was ever written. Well maybe it was never written…maybe there was never a script at all. The second horror is that they actually tried to pass Romanian farmers off as Americans. This might have worked except they gave these actors a speaking role…very bad move. The third horror was that Leigh Scott (Hillside Cannibals, Transmorphers), the writer/director, convinced the executive producer that this was all going to end up well…or at worst, the exec producer might get laid if he ponied up a few G’s.

Now that we got that out of the way, there were some positive notes. It was only a feature and not a mini series. No real dinosaurs were harmed during the filming of this movie. And lastly, the two young performers, Sara Butler (A Couple of White Chicks at the Hairdresser) and Jonathon Trent (Transformers 2, Downstream) were pretty good. Despite some less then flattering comments about the cast by would-be, wanna-be critics, this ESL (English as a second language) challenged script actually was translated well by these two actors. Kudos for taking lemons and…well…don’t take anymore lemons in the future. You two are better than that.

Jace Alexander to Direct 2-hour Pilot for Sci Fi Channel

Remember the charming petty-thief that made Alicia Silverstone lay down on the ground ruining her sexy, red, important dress in the movie Clueless? Well, that thief has become quite a notable force in the industry directing more than 30 episodes of Law and Order and almost 20 episodes of Rescue Me. Why should FM care? Because Jace Alexander’s current project is none other than the 2-hour Sci Fi Channel pilot for the newly picked up series Warehouse 13.

Created by Battlestar Galactica co-exec producer Jane Epenson, Farscape mastermind Rockne O’Bannon and D. Brent Mote 13 is looking to be a mix of X-Files meets Raiders of the Lost Ark meets The Crush (not really, but Alicia Silverstone is hot and I’d let her unleash a hive of bees to take care of my girlfriend any day). 13 is slated to premier in Summer 2008. Let’s hope it’s as good as it sounds.

Creepy Casting

Entertainment Weekly’s Ausiello Files Blog revealed that Stephanie Jacobsen who played officer Kendra Shaw in the Battlestar Galactica TV movie, Razor, will join the cast of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.  Jacobsen will play another resistance fighter from the future and the love interest for Derek (Brian Austin Green).  While some may disagree, her harsh role aboard the Pegasus under Admiral Cain’s rule seems to be a suitable resume to play a resistance fighter to me.

Cyclon-Centric Cast for Battlestar Galactica Movie Prequel

Posted by dominie in Events, Films, News on September 9th, 2008

Not to be confused with the already shot prequel series Caprica from director Jeffrey Reiner, the new Battlestar Galactica movie prequel is in the works!  The two hour event has not been titled yet, but the outline goes a little something like this: “Starting before the events of the miniseries, our story focuses on familiar characters including Cylon Number One, known as Cavil (Stockwell), Resistance Leader Sam T. Anders (Trucco) and Chief Galen Tyrol (Douglas). In the beginning, the Cylons had a plan, but it didn’t account for one thing: survivors. During the chaotic aftermath of the destruction, two powerful Cylon agents struggle with plots and priorities on the human ships that got away, and among the resistance fighters who were left behind.”

Jane Espenson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, Gilmore Girls), who’s written some of the best episodes for BSG in the past returns for this highly anticipated addition to the series, and Edward James Olmos, the admirable Admiral Bill Adama, will direct.

Wait, it gets even more exciting.  Sci-Fi has confirmed that Edward James Olmos (Admiral Adama), Michael Trucco (Sam Anders), Aaron Douglas (Chief Tyrol) and Dean Stockwell (Brother Cavil) Tricia Helfer (Caprica/No. 6), Grace Park (Boomer/Athena), Callum Keith Rennie (Leoben), Rick Worthy (Simon) and that surly Michael Hogan (Tigh) would appear in the project.  That’s eight of twelve cyclones confirmed!

Other tidbits: Cylons Lucy Lawless (D’Anna Biers), Matthew Bennett (Aaron Doral), and Rekha Sharma (Tory Foster) were not mentioned. Still waiting to hear on updates pursuing Katee Sackhoff (Kara Thrace/Starbuck).  Darn.  And lastly the 12th and final Cylon will be kept under lock and key to be revealed in the final 10 episodes early next year.
