“If you’re going to do Star Trek there are many things you cannot change,” explains JJ Abrams. Feast your eyes below; the image is the first photo that Paramount has released of the new USS Enterprise, the NCC-1701 and Entertainment Weekly provided the goods.

The familiar look is the result of Abrams’ fusion of the TV-series Enterprise with the movie-franchise Enterprise. He continues to explain, “The Enterprise is a visual touchstone for so many people. So if you’re going to do the Enterprise, it better look like the Enterprise, because otherwise, what are you doing?”

The Latest Announcements in Marvel’s Superhero Slates

Posted by dominie in Films, News on October 5th, 2008

The deal signed between Paramount Pictures and Marvel to distribute their studio’s next five self-produced films has announced the latest updates for release.

Iron Man 2 will hit theaters May 7, 2010.  Its been rumored that Jon Favreau would like to do Iron Man 2 in IMAX like The Dark Knight or possibly even in 3-D.  Paramount and Marvel have not yet come to a decision, but considering Iron Man’s gross at the Box Office, Favreau may very well receive the budget he needs to complete these shots.

Thor will also be released next summer, July 16, 2010 to be exact. According to Variety, Irish actor and director Kenneth Branagh is in talks to direct this big screen adaptation of Marvel Comics’ Thor. If a deal is signed, it will be Branagh’s first action-heavy movie since his 1989 Henry V, portraying the bloody British conquest of France.

For 2011, The First Avenger: Captain America premieres May 6 and The Avengers follows on July 15.  The First Avenger, penned by David Self is set in WWII and will lead directly into the The Avenger, screenplay by Zak Penn, so the man cast as Steve Rogers also known as Captain America will be essentially filming both movies simultaneously.  First Matthew McConaughey was rumored to play the role and the latest is Will Smith.

Lastly, an Iron Man 3 release date still has not been announced.

The official Press Release below confirms that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will follow in The Dark Knight’s path.

IMAX Corporation (NASDAQ: IMAX; TSX: IMX), DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures today announced that director Michael Bay will shoot key sequences of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen with IMAX(R) cameras. Bay will integrate the IMAX footage with state of the art CGI to create an unprecedented look and feel for the highly anticipated sequel to last year’s box office hit, Transformers. As previously announced, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will be released to IMAX(R) theatres simultaneously with the movie’s wide release on June 26, 2009.

The movie sequences shot in traditional 35mm will be digitally re-mastered into the unparalleled image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience(R) with IMAX DMR(R) (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The IMAX DMR scenes will appear in the traditional “letterbox” shape, while scenes shot with IMAX’s cameras will expand vertically to fill the entire IMAX screen.

“The extraordinary level of detail and intensity captured by the IMAX camera creates many exciting possibilities for us with this film,” said Michael Bay, the film’s director. “IMAX’s all-encompassing format will take this story to a new level, and I am once again very excited to share The IMAX Experience with Transformers fans around the world.”

“The addition of another amazing title from DreamWorks and Paramount, combined with more groundbreaking use of IMAX technology by Hollywood’s top filmmakers, are examples of how far we have come as a company and a distribution platform over the past several years,” said IMAX Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs Richard L. Gelfond and Bradley J. Wechsler. “The growth of the IMAX theatre network, fueled by the economical benefits of the new IMAX digital system, is driving interest from virtually all of the top studios, which is resulting in more IMAX movies for audiences to enjoy.”

“Michael Bay’s innovative use of IMAX cameras will create a spectacular cinematic adventure for moviegoers next summer,” added Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. “We’re very excited to be integrated as a core part of the Transformers production, and with the skilled marketing and distribution teams at DreamWorks and Paramount, the timing is ideal given our expanding global audience and network footprint.”

The IMAX release of this movie was previously mentioned in IMAX Corporation’s second quarter results press release on August 7.

The Dark Knight - Joker 2The Dark Knight continues to rule the box office as it takes the number one position for the fourth weekend in a row, the first time any 2008 release has achieved this.  Its estimated haul of $26,030,000 pushes its domestic take to $441,541,000, faster than any movie in history.

In its second weekend Universal’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor dropped -60.2%, taking in just $16,113,000.  With a total of $70,671,000, it chugs along although there has to be some concern that bad word of mouth, poor reviews and steep drop off may mean the franchise is running out of steam despite director Rob Cohen already talking a fourth film. Box Office Roundup

Posted by bob in Films, News on August 3rd, 2008

The Dark Knight - leapAfter a strong Friday showing, it looked as if The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor might topple The Dark Knight from the top of the box office.  However, mostly negative reviews seem to have scared enough people away so it opened at number two for the weekend.  It took in a healthy $42,450,000, under Universal’s estimates, but was beaten by Batman, who brought an additional $43,800,000 to Gotham City.  The film now has earned a total of $394,887,000 in just three weeks and will clear the $400 million hurdle any minute now.

Showing surprising durability, Brendan Fraser’s other summer film, Journey to the Center of the Earth finished its fourth week in fifth place, taking in  $6,875,000, totaling $73,140,000. (more…)

The drop off is interesting in that it’s a relatively modest -52.3%.  To date, the second Batman film from Christopher Nolan has accumulated  $314,245,000, faster than any other film in history.

20th Century Fox’s The X-Files: I Want to Believe debuted in a disappointing fourth place, taking in just $10,200,000. (more…)

Posted by bob in Films, News on July 27th, 2008

Sam RaimiSam Raimi knows how to work a room.  After being lionized by the faithful for his work on the Spider-Man films, the audience was predisposed toward loving whatever he had come next.  That just happens to be Drag me to Hell, an original thriller starring panelists Dileep Rao, Justin Long, and Alison Lohman.

Raimi explained he is inspired to produce horror films because he enjoys building suspense like telling a good campfire story.  “Spider-Man has so many effects and I wanted to get back to the basics and have a small bunch and get back to a more intimate relationship with the actors and get back to the old campfire story.” (more…)
