Motel Hell Gains Director

Posted by dominie in Films, News on October 13th, 2008

According to Bloody –Disgusting, Steven C. Miller, the man behind Automation Transfusion, is in the final stages of sealing his deal with MGM to helm the remake of Motel Hell.

The film was originally slated for a Halloween release day, however MGM made a decision to sell the rights to the franchise to Twisted Pictures.  We’re unsure at this time what will become of the film. Talks have been underway to either scrap the remake treatment or to create a brand new Motel Hell original franchise (preferably the later.).  Twisted Pictures is most popularly known for its creation of the Saw franchise, so this may have been a great move for MGM.

In the original classic 1980 horror comedy, Farmer Vincent kidnaps tourists and buries them alive, feeding them to prepare his victims for tomorrow’s famous sausage. His famous motto is, “It takes all kinds of critters…to make Farmer Vincent’s fritters.”

This horror from what I’ve heard is more enjoyable than one would speculate. If you’re a fan of horror spoofs, stay tuned for more details as they come.

MGM has slated A Perfect Getaway for release on March 13, 2009, one year after its production began.  Written and directed by David Twohy (Pitch Black, The Chronicles of Riddick) for Relativity Media, A Perfect Getaway is the story of a newlywed couple who vacations to Hawaii for their honeymoon “getaway.”  Unbeknownst to them, it will be their worst nightmare when they meet two hikers who turn out to be vicious killers.  The film stars Timothy Olyphant, Steve Zahn, Milla Jovovich, and Kiele Sanchez.

According to Variety, arthouse director Kenneth Branagh (Henry V) has been in talks to direct Marvel Comics’ next live-active film, Thor, to be released in summer 2010.  Thor follows a disabled medical student Donald Blake, who has an alter ego as the hammer-wielding Norse god Thor.  Similar to Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, Thor will be funded by Marvel using their $500 million credit facility through Merrill Lynch.  The Iron Man sequel will also go through the same treatment.

Directors have been circling at the opportunity to bring Robert E. Howard’s infamous Conan character to the big screen again for quite some time now.  Yesterday Dread Central got word that Nu Image may attach Brett Ratner (X-Men: The Last Stand, Rush Hour series) to the new project?!  The news hasn’t been confirmed yet, thank goodness, but we do know the studio is anticipating a 2010 release, 28 years after the original Conan the Barbarian!

B-D reports MGM has signed on a writer (TBA) for their direct-to-disc sequel of The Amityville Horror, which will play like more of a spinoff of Sci-Fi Channel’s Ghost Hunters.  Lets keep our fingers cross they will steer clear of any dollhouses, mirrors, and other what-not ridiculousness.

Additionally, Warner Bros. Pictures has slated Orphan, Jaume Collet-Serra’s (House of Wax) latest project for release on November 6, 2009.  Peter Sarsgaard, Vera Farmiga, Isabelle Fuhrman, Lorry Ayers, David Leonard, and Skye Peters star in this story about a young mother who adopts a child, Esther.  The result is anything other than a happily ever after ending.

Creepy Casting

We told you before that Summit Entertainment picked up the production deal of MGM’s Sorority Row remake based on Mark Rosman’s 1983 The House on Sorority Row.  The crew is currently prepping to begin shooting in Pittsburgh, PA next month and will be helmed by director Stewart Hendler (Whisper).

Actors Briana Evigan (Step Up 2: The Streets), Rumer Willis (The House Bunny), and MTV’s The Hills star Audrina Patridge have been cast in principal roles.

The official synopsis is supplied from Bloody-Disgusting:

“When five sorority girls inadvertently cause the murder of one of their sisters in a prank gone wrong, they agree to keep the matter to themselves and never speak of it again, so they can get on with their lives. This proves easier said than done, when after graduation a mysterious killer goes after the five of them and anyone who knows their secret…”

Robocop Talk

Posted by dominie in Films, News on September 16th, 2008

Our recent reports that speculated a set in the future resurrection of the Robocop franchise seems to still be in play.   MTV News caught up with director Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream, Pi) at the Toronto Film Festival in an attempt to dig deep for the juicy plot details of his Robocop reboot.

Efforts to squeeze more from Aronofsky remained fruitless.   When asked again this time whether the film would take place in Detroit like the original movies, Aronofsky continued to only drop obscure details.  His response, “We’re deep in it.  But there’s not much to say until there is a screenplay.  I don’t think it’s set anywhere that’s recognizable.”

Aronofsky’s answer could not be more unhelpful.  How would you decipher his response?  “B*tches leave” your comments here.

Anita Page 98 Moves On

Posted by dominie in Events, News on September 8th, 2008

Anita Page, the last surviving star of the silent film era has moved on.  Born Anita Pomares in New York State in 1910, the legendary Hollywood actress successfully transitioned from silent films to the first talkie movies in a career that spanned 84 years.

Anita Page had her big break in 1928 in the popular Jazz Age silent melodrama Our Dancing Daughters, playing the leading lady alongside Joan Crawford.  She went on to play secondary parts opposite the likes of William Haines, Ramon Novarro, Lon Chaney, Buster Keaton, Bessie Love, and many others.  In 1928, Page was ranked second only to Greta Garbo at MGM, followed by Crawford.  At the peak of her success, Page received 35,000 fan letters a week, of which she continued to respond to even into her 90s.

Page’s 1929 hit with Bessie Love, The Broadway Melody won the first Best Picture Oscar.  She had a part in West In Zanzibar and starred as Myrtle in While the City Sleeps with our favorite Lon Chaney Sr. where you can’t help but to appreciate Page in all her beauty. Page’s final film role will be as Elizabeth Frankenstein in the upcoming horror movie Frankenstein Rising, due for release later this year.

Anita Page is the last known living attendee of the very first Academy Awards in 1929.  Harry from Ain’t It Cool News said it best, “Too often in today’s society we miss the great silent sirens - Anita was one of those.  We lost an amazing link to cinematic history - and from everything I’ve heard, an amazing lady.”

The actor passed away in her sleep on September 6, 2008 at 98 years old.

Many Date Changes

New Line Cinema has postponed Final Destination 4 3D back a week to open on August 21, 2009.

MGM has removed The Poughkeepsie Tapes from this year’s slate.  But good news is we can still expect a release in 2009.

Also from MGM, Eli Roth’s Trailer Trash, a full length feature consisting of fake movie trailers that all tie together has been labeled N/A for release.  No further details on this story yet.

On the flip side, Warner Bros. has pushed up the release date for Richard Kelly’s The Box from September 11, 2009 to March 20, 2009.  The film is an adaptation based on a Twilight Zone episode Button, Button written by Richard Matheson.
The Box stars Cameron Diaz as Norma Lewis and James Marsden as Arthur Lewis, a suburban couple with a young child who receive a simple wooden box as a gift, which bears fatal and irrevocable consequences. A mysterious stranger, played by Frank Langella, delivers the message that the box promises to bestow upon its owner $1 million with the press of a button. But, pressing this button will simultaneously cause the death of another human being somewhere in the world…someone they don’t know. With just 24 hours to have the box in their possession, Norma and Arthur find themselves in the crosshairs of a startling moral dilemma and must face the true nature of their humanity.”

Terror Tidbits

Last week we announced that MGM confirmed the greenlight on the remake of Tobe Hooper and Steven Spielberg’s Poltergiest.  The new film, written by Juliet Snowden and Stiles White, will be helmed by Vadim Perelman who “delved into similar dynamics in his debut, 2003’s House of Sand and Fog and last year’s The Life Before Her Eyes,” reveals The Hollywood Reporter.

Variety announced that Steven Shell’s Mum & Dad, a British contemporary horror made under Film London’s Microwave scheme, has just been picked up by Revolver Entertainment for UK, Ireland, and US distribution.  The synopsis: “Mum and Dad, and their ‘adopted’ children, Birdie & Elbie, work at the airport. The family live off whatever they scavenge from cargo holds, offices and hotels - including a steady stream of transient workers who populate the airport’s soulless hub. When Lena, a young Polish office cleaner, is befriended by Birdie, she gets drawn into a nightmarish world of torture, murder and perversity. Imprisoned in a suburban House of Horrors and designated a ‘Mummy’s Girl’, Lena’s only options appear to be to become part of the family - and join them in their insanity - or die.”

The new poster for His Name Was Jason, a documentary film by Dan Ferrands (Crystal Lake Memories) celebrating the legacy of Friday the 13th has just been revealed. More pictures and details can be found on their MySpace page.  Again, the documentary will premiere on Starz! in February 2009 and Anchor Bay will release the DVD soon thereafter.

Exclusive from Bloody-Disgusting, J.T. Petty’s The Burrowers trailer is now available here.  The western horror thriller tells the tale of a band of brave men who embark on a crusade to find the killers responsible for a local family massacre—only to discover an evil that lurks below is waiting to feed on them.  Doug Hutchison, Clancy Brown, William Mapother, and Sean Patrick Thomas star in the film.  The film will premiere during Midnight Madness at the Toronto International Film Festival this September.

MGM Slates Speedy Release in Competition with Lionsgate

Posted by dominie in Films, News on August 25th, 2008

Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Goners, Serenity) is teaming up with Drew Goddard (Cloverfield, Lost, Alias, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel) again for MGM’s Cabin in the Woods. Whedon first announced the news about his new thriller to MTV in early July and MGM acquired the script with Goddard to direct the following day. Now, MGM has now announced that Woods is slated for theatrical release on October 23, 2009—just one week before Lionsgate’s Saw VI scheduled for October 30th.
Whedon and Goddard first worked on Buffy the Vampire Slayer together and then on its spinoff Angel, both of which were highly successful. In an interview with MTV, Goddard didn’t give any details about the plot but did say, “It’s genius, it’s funny… It’s got a harder and darker edge, but it’s also got classic Whedon qualities. It’ll rip your heart out and be heartfelt at the same time… There’s a reason the title is so straightforward. It’s its own sub-genre, the cabin in the woods, and this is sort of our take on it. It’s fresh and new.”
