He and director Todd Lincoln spoke to a full room at Comic-Con International where they described their vision as “a blood soaked buddy movie.” While there remains no casting, both were optimistic that production could start before year’s end.

Vampire Hunter D Comics from Devil’s Due

Posted by bob in Comics, News on June 30th, 2008

Vampire Hunter DAlso at WizardWorld Chicago, Devil’s Due announced it has picked up the rights to create a new Vampire Hunter D miniseries, American Wasteland. DDP president Josh Blaylock will cowrite the event and he spoke with ComicMix (http://www.comicmix.com/) about the project.

“I think there’s something cool about him that transcends,” Blaylock said of the character created by Hideyuki Kikuchi.. “It has a very hardcore fan following who are very faithful to the Manga and the anime. In the ’80s there were only a few anime you could get a hold of, especially edgy animation. As a comic book fan, you craved that type of content but there was only so much you could get. There was Vampire Hunter D, Fist of the North Star… and D was this crazy, short cut-and-dry story that I got into way back when. It just seemed like it would be a lot of fun to do a Westernized take on him. I’m not talking about changing the look of the character drastically or anything like that, though.” (more…)

Hack/Slash Gains New Screenwriter

Posted by bob in Comics, News on April 9th, 2008

Devil’s Due’s Hack/Slash just took a big step closer to filming with Justin Marks named by Rogue Pictures to write the script.  Todd Lincoln (From Dusk till Dawn) is already on board to direct the adaptation of the comic, created by Tim Seeley and Stefano Caselli. Adrian Askarieh and Daniel Alter (Hitman) are also attached to produce the film.

The comic debuted in 2004 in a series of one-shots, beginning with Euthanized, followed by Girls Gone Dead, drawn by Fedrica Manfredi.  It has since spawned an on-going series and a series of trade paperback collections including an Omnibus bringing people quickly up to date.

Hack/SlashThe series is about Cassandra “Cassie” Hack, daughter of the Lunch Lady, a famed slasher. She grew up a wall flower with low self-esteem until her mother snapped and as the Lunch Lady, killed Cassie’s cruel classmates.  Cassie turned her mother in, only to see her commit suicide, rise from the dead to kill again and daughter was forced to slay mother.  This set her on a course that changed her into a fearless hunter of serial killers.

As she crisscrossed the country, she attacked Vlad, thinking him the killer but when he proved his innocence they teamed up to get the real culprit.  A partnership and friendship blossomed between them despite Vlad being enigmatic, hiding his disfigured face under a gas mask.

The initial stories have already been adapted for theater as Hack/Slash: Stage Fright.  Rogue’s movie option was announced in 2006 and actress Megan Fox (Transformers) says she wants to play Cassie.  Lincoln, a fan of the material, cowrote a script with Martin Schenk and Rogue anticipated shooting last year. The project has languished since.

The producers are no strangers to comics properties as they are also at work on a live-action Jonny Quest for Warner Bros.; Lost Squad for Rogue; Kane and Lynch for Lionsgate; and Spy Hunter at Universal.

Marks has also become a comics and video game specialist with scripts already produced for Voltron: Defender of the Universe for New Regency and 20th Century-Fox; He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and a Green Arrow project for Warner Bros. His Street Fighter script is already shooting for Fox.
