Beyonce Fancies Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman Role

Posted by dominie in Films, News on November 10th, 2008

In an interview with LA Times, popstar Beyonce Knowles revealed she met with Warner Bros. and DC Comics reps to express her interest in playing their superhero princess, Wonder Woman. My fingers quiver at the possibility of this becoming true. I am a huge fan of Beyonce and her music, however the interview speaks for itself. She does not fit the role, only the costume. Read on for excerpts from her interview.

The recent success of sophisticated comic-book adaptations is the main reason for Beyoncé’s interest, she said, but her focus on Wonder Woman was intensified earlier this year when she saw Lynda Carter’s costume from the 1970s television show on display at the Costume Institute’s “Superhero” show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Wonder Woman costume is an “unforgiving one” she tells LA Times. “I would definitely have to keep it right for that costume. The way that Lynda Carter wore it, she was sooo fine. She was amazing. I saw her costume at the Met. Her waist was unbelievable. It was pretty crazy, actually, her proportions. But I love Wonder Woman and it’d be a dream come true to be that character. It sure would be handy to have that lasso. To make everybody tell the truth? I need that. It would come in very handy.” (more…)

An Original DC Graphic Novel, Joker

Posted by dominie in Comics on October 19th, 2008

MTV Splash Page unveiled a sneak peak of a must-see graphic novel from DC Comics titled Joker from writer Brian Azzarello with art by Lee Bermejo, which arrives just in time for Halloween on October 29. I’m not a collector, but I’ll be sure to pick one of these up. The artwork truly honors the work of the late Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight. Check it out for yourself.

“Writer Brian Azzarello and artist Lee Bermejo’s “Joker” — which hits shelves October 29 — paints the “Clown Prince of Crime” as a sadistic, unpredictable and absurdly violent psychopath, or in other words, exactly the way the character should be portrayed. And while the story takes place well-outside the realm of Christopher Nolan’s vision of Gotham City, if you liked “The Dark Knight,” “Joker” is a must-have for your bookshelf.”

“The story — narrated through the voice of one of the Joker’s recently-hired goons — follows the just-released-from-Arkham Asylum villain as he seeks to reclaim his rightful spot at the top of Gotham criminal hierarchy by any means necessary. In order to get to that spot again, he’ll have to face the rest of Gotham’s top dogs — including Two-Face, The Riddler, Killer Croc and the Penguin.”

Creepy Casting

Posted by dominie in Comics, Films, News on October 10th, 2008

According to Variety, W star Josh Brolin (American Gangster, The Goonies) is close to sealing the deal with Warner Bros. to star in the upcoming feature adaptation of DC Comics’ Jonah Hex, written and to be directed by the Crank creators Brian Taylor and Mark Neveldine. Andrew Lazar and Akiva Goldsman are producing.

Nothing has been signed yet however, and both Warner Bros. and Brolin’s reps have not officially announced the casting news. I’d love to see this go forward. I have nothing against Thomas Jane (previously thought to play the role), but Brolin’s versatility and range makes him the “chosen one” to take on Jonah Hex, arguably one of DC Comics’ best characters. Created in 1972 by John Albano and Tony DeZuniga, Hex is a disfigured veteran of the Confederate army during the American Civil War.  He was sold into slavery by his father, faced his mother’s turn to prostitution, betrayed during battle, sentenced to have a searing hot tomahawk branded on his face for defending himself in a battle. Hex is one unlucky character.

Creepy Casting Rumor

Not yet finalized, but it’s being rumored on Latino Review that Ryan Gosling may be playing the role of Hal Jordan in DC Comics’ upcoming theatrical feature of The Green Lantern, one of DC Comic’s most popular superheros of all time.  Previous reports have stated the producer Donald De Line has eyes set for rehearsals to begin in February and shooting begin Spring 2009.

THR reports that Dominic Monaghan (Lost) and Freddy Rodriguez (Six Feet Under) have been cast in Swiss writer-director Barthelemy Grossmann’s (13 m2) upcoming horror thriller, Fortuna.  The film is one of many that are done in light of the recent state of our economy.

“Set in 2100, Fortuna envisions an Earth where a collapsed economy and climate crises have eliminated the middle class, leaving a few very wealthy and the teeming masses in severe poverty. To give hope and avoid revolt, the elite create Fortuna, a mysterious game where one in a thousand wins a big payday and joins the upper classes. But their hidden goal to “reduce poverty” by 30% over 50 years comes with a deadly price tag.”

Grossmann will also star alongside Monaghan and Rodriguez, playing desperate men who compete in the game that begins lensing on November 10. The film, privately funded by producer Laurent Zilber and co-produced by Scott Duncan, will shoot over a six week span.

Box Office Report

Posted by bob in Films, News on August 18th, 2008

The Dark Knight surpassed Star Wars twice this weekend.  First, it firmly grabbed second place on the All Time Box Office charts with a total now estimated at $471,493,000.  It’s weekend take of $16,790,000 also surpassed the debut of the CGI-animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars which managed a so-so $15,505,000.  The film received mixed reviews and little in the way of anticipatory buzz so its performance over the next week or two will be telling.

20th-Century Fox, which has had a miserable summer, finally got some good news when Mirrors opened with $11,125,000, exceeding studio estimates by 10%. (more…)

Lots of interesting bits and pieces of news was overheard or revealed on the Comic-con show floor or at panels.

Greg McLean, director of the forthcoming Rogue, said he was on the west coast firming up plans for his next horror project.

Terry Goodkind’s Wizard’s First Rule, soon to be a syndicated televisions series produced by Sam Raimi has undergone a name change to Legend of the Seeker.  A website for the show has also gone live: http://www.legendoftheseeker.com/

Mike Grell (Jon Sable Freelance) will be returning to his most famous creation at DC, The Warlord, in time for the character’s 35th anniversary.

At a Doc Savage panel, producer Michael Uslan (The Dark Knight) revealed work is underway on a new film version of the classic pulp hero.  The last version was, of course, the late George Pal’s film in 1975.

Review: Batman: Gotham Knight

Posted by bob in Comics, Films, Reviews on July 13th, 2008

Batman Gotham Knight DVDBatman: Gotham Knight is a very clever DVD tie-in to The Dark Knight, opening next week.  The six interlocking stories are said to show audiences Batman’s growing experience from a novice in Batman Begins to more veteran The Dark Knight.

With six different animation teams, three writers, David Goyer (who cowrote BB), Josh Olson (A History of Violence) and Alan Burnett (Batman The Animated Series), tackle the tales and as a result they are all over the place in terms of both quality and relevance.Batman Begins ends very clearly setting up the Joker as the next major villain he battles but if the animated exploits are to be considered, he first took time out to deal with mob warfare, the return of Scarecrow, Killer Croc and Deadshot.  From a storytelling point of view, that’s a lot to swallow.
