Fall of Cthulhu: Godwar continues BOOM!’s mythos based on H.P. Lovecraft’s pulp stories. The new series, debuting Wednesday, from writer Michael Alan Nelson and Mat Santolouco picks up where things were left off in a previous series and the entire first issue sets up the new events while recapping where we are. As a result, for those just joining, you pretty quickly catch up with the players and situation so kudos to Nelson.
Having said that, the story structure takes up along with snippets focusing on the varying players and it definitely felt very formal, almost a checklist of people and places. We pick up on Cy Morgan, our protagonist, now in the Arkham mental institution. As he chats with his therapist, we cut around to see where Arkham himself is, seemingly preparing for something bad to happen. In the Dreamlands, we meet Lucifer, a young woman being put into service by Harlot, who seems to be commanding one side of the coming war. She tasks Lucifer with freeing Morgan from his confinement for as-yet unexplained reasons. Then there’s Nodens, the entity seeking Arkham for its own reasons. (more…)

BOOM! Studios continue to make a lot of significant noise at Comic-Con International. First was the Pixar deal on Thursday and now we have the following release:
July 25th, 2008 - Los Angeles, CA - Today BOOM! Studios and The Jim Henson Company revealed that Rockne S. O’Bannon, beloved creator of Farscape, will be writing BOOM!’s recently announced Farscape comic book series. Widely recognized as one of the greatest sci-fi series in television history, the multi-award-winning Farscape will make the transition to comics later this year.
“This is a dream opportunity for me - to get to continue the Farscape saga,” O’Bannon said. “The comic book series starts off directly where the Peacekeeper Wars mini-series left us. It’s like we’re finally getting to experience Season Five of Farscape. Not only that, but the stories in the ongoing comic series will completely tie into the upcoming Farscape webisodes. Farscape lives!” (more…)

Described as a “supernatural thriller in the vein of 24,” BOOM Studios has announced the arrival of The Remnant. The new series “will explore the fundamental questions of human life and our perception of reality.”
The project was created by actor Stephen Baldwin with a story by Baldwin and Eureka creator Andrew Cosby. BOOM! Studios will have a special-edition preview book priced at five dollars during Comic Con International. Baldwin will also be signing at the BOOM! booth Friday the 25th and Saturday the 26th.
“I wanted to do a comic that asked the big questions but answered them in little ways,” said Baldwin in a release. “Philosophy and spirituality are complex beasts, but I believe literature’s purpose is to contextualize these tricky subjects into entertaining stories that speak, not preach, to the reader.”
Critically acclaimed writer Caleb Monroe (Negative Burn) will script The Remnant with art by newcomer Julian Totino Tedesco. Covers will be from artist Paul Azaceta.

Blood Bowl started off as a table top role playing game and then transitioned to a successful series of delightfully twisted novels from Matt Forbeck. Now, Forbeck brings the blood sport to comics with the five-issue miniseries Blood Bowl: Killer Contract. The first issue, on sale tomorrow, breathlessly kicks off and keeps the action and body parts pumping along.
Demons, orcs and other misshapen beings suit up to play in the deadly sport styled after football but with fewer rules and a spiked pigskin. All the characters from his novels are present and he manages to breezily introduce you to them through the announcers’ play-by-play and then some halftime moments that serve to set up the remaining four issues. The Bad Bay Hackers and their rivals, the Orcland Raiders square off and somehow, Forbeck even manages to squeeze in family squabbles and a love story so kudos to him. (more…)

Lovecraft’s “Necronomicon,” the religious text featured in dozens of Lovecraft’s short stories and novellas. Hitting store shelves in August, BOOM!’s Necronomicon is written by long-time fan-favorite William Messner-Loebs, with gruesome interior art by Andrew Ritchie and scream-inducing covers by J.K. Woodward. (more…)

The mall remains one of the centerpieces in a teenager’s life and has been the setting for horror stories dating back to the first Dawn of the Dead. There’s an entire subculture within any mall, made up of teens from one or more high schools, working at the various shops and congregating in the food court during breaks to gossip, mock, and engage in what passes for witty banter.
As a result, it’s the perfect setting for a slasher story and Scream Queen delivers pretty much what you would expect. The first issue (of five) arrives in comic shops today and introduces us to the stock players from Rumson High: the perverts, the bitches, the nice girl and so on. As written by Brendan Hay (Frank TV), they sound like teens but none of them feel fully realized. You get just enough character color to understand which one most deserves to get whacked. (more…)

BOOM! Studios has been off to an impressive start with a wide array of subject matter and they have attracted a nice variety of talents. People seem to be finally catching on as some of their offerings have gained traction. Among them is Zombie Tales, which has previously been a miniseries. Tomorrow, the first issue of an ongoing monthly series launches.
The comic has three stories, one serial, two stand-alone and they are all good looking and well-written. It’s tough to find something new to say about a zombie attack or being a zombie so finding compelling stories will be tough and in all three cases, the writers have opted to focus on one or two main characters, making them the focal point and making the reader care.
