Brian Yuzna (Re-Animator), known for his fantasy films has sealed a deal to produce a trio of 3-D movies to be made in Indonesia. The films will be shot in English and produced under Komodo Film, which is owned by Yuzna. Read on for the details from Variety.
First up on the 3-D roster is Amphibious, a thriller about a giant sea scorpion that Yuzna will direct from a script he penned with John Penney. Pic will be co-produced by Infinite Frameworks of Singapore. Shooting is slated to begin in March on Batam Island.
Next will be Necronauts, a journey into the realm of death written by novelist Terry Bisson. Pic will be helmed by Lawnmower Man and Virtuosity director Brett Leonard, who has also directed two Imax 3-D movies.

It looks like Alex Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Mirrors) is adamant about taking his time on this one. Last month, Aja’s Piranha 3-D (penned by himself with partner Gregory Levasseur) went through revisions under Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunston, creators of Feast III and Saw IV-V. Melton and Dunston’s contract was termed for two weeks with production still hard on schedule for its July 24, 2009 release. Shock Till You Drop just received news however; this may no longer be the case. Aja has delayed principle photography for Piranha 3-D until March or April 2009.
According to Shock’s sources, “The reason for the delay was the size of the project and the prep work needed to execute Aja’s 3-D visuals. ‘There just wasn’t enough time for pre-production to get it done in time. It’s all about pre-production and trying to make it the best it can be.’”
We can’t argue with that statement, but this means sticking to their highly paraded July summer release date may be scantly out of reach.

Bloody-Disgusting recently caught up with Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunston, the creators of Feast III and Saw IV-V where they confirmed that Alex Aja’s Piranha 3-D has gone into production for Dimension Films. Melton and Dunston were commissioned for a two-week polish of Aja’s draft. They described their experience as “simply adding some character details and tweaking a few kills. Nothing big. We weren’t really rewriting Alex’s draft,” they told B-D. “Just adding detail.” The film is currently on schedule for its July 24, 2009 release.

The Listening Dead, everyone’s favorite silent short film, will also be breaking into the 3D realm. The story evolved originally from a song about a guy that complained that his girlfriend only cared for him when he was gone. When their song was rejected, the creators took the idea and expanded the story. Thus came the birth of “The Listening Dead,” a gothic fable that tells of how a pianist Nigel (Peter Scriba) becomes obsessed with his latest composition, which attracts an unforeseen thrill. While Nigel’s music creates a rift between him and his wife Karen (Karen Miller), it also attracts a beautiful ghost (Sarah Hund) who falls in love with his work. Frustrated from his lack of attention towards her, Karen scribbles on a photo of Nigel who is then turned into a living scribble by a spirit that haunts the house. The ghost must now intervene to rescue the mortal she has fallen in love with.
TLD is unique to any other short. In creating the short film, writer and director Phil Mucci puts to rest any doubt about going old-school in film making. TLD is not only deeply rooted in 20th century expressionistic horror and sci-fi, but it also brings a fresh appeal as well. To prepare for the film, actors and crew referenced both vintage silent horror films such as the works of Fritz Lang (Metropolis) and later works such as Mario Bava’s Black Sunday and David Lynch’s Eraserhead. The exaggerated style of silent film acting and the quality of handmade special effects became the predominating elements of Mucci’s film in which he utilized old-school optical printing techniques to achieve the desired look. In effect, “all the actors are able to tell the story so evocatively though mere movement and facial expression” explain Mucci.
The short has been rumored to hit select theaters as early as Halloween. The film has won numerous awards for Best Short Film and Best Short Cinematography at various festivals such as Freaky Film Festival, Slamdance Film Festival, Fantasporto Film Festival, etc.

Director David Ellis (Final Destination 2) returns for the fourth installment of the Final Destination franchise scheduled for release August 14, 2009. The production team has been working with the PACE camera, introducing a new advance hi-definition Fusion 3D technology never before used that “will serve as a blueprint for the rest of the entire film industry for years to come,” proclaimed producer Craig Perry in an interview with Bloody-Disgusting. He is confident that “Final Destination 4 will mercilessly bitch slap the 3D My Bloody Valentine remake into submission” and not to mention “own any other 3D horror film that tries to oppose [them].”
The goal of the movie makers this time around was to literally make the audience jump out of their seats and feel like part of the supernatural thrill ride. Many long explanations have been cut from FD4 in contrast to past installments, creating a lighter tone in the gruesome surprise killings. Rest assured however, they are no less enjoyable. (more…)

With Wanted now out and receiving positive reviews, there’s little doubt that Universal Studios are already thinking sequel. We’ll see what box office is like at the weekend, but everyone knows this is going to make a LOT of dough.”

Fear Itself debuted on Thursday night to small ratings, with a mere 5.2 million viewers tuning in . That it opened against another first run series, CBS’ Swingtown (which had 8.5 million viewers) , didn’t help. Nor did the lack of serious promotion from NBC despite the stellar line-up before and behind the camera. NBC, though, is reportedly pleased with the performance.
