Book Review: Night Souls LH Maynard & MPN Sims

Night Souls by L.H. Maynard & M.P.M. Sims

“Department 18: Government agents specializing in the paranormal and associated psychic phenomena, including hauntings, poltergeist activity, demonic possession and other unexplained occurrences. All files highly classified.

They have existed since before man walked the earth. They are the Breathers, a species of vampire-like creatures that feed on human souls. They have evolved over the centuries and now are split into two warring factions. Both are a threat to mankind. As the battle lines are drawn, Robert Carter and Department 18 are caught in the middle. They are all that stand between the two sides and their unsuspecting prey. Us. “

Maynard and Sims eagerly awaited second Department 18 novel arrives this coming June from Dorchester Publishing. It was well worth the wait.

Maynard and Sims have an uncanny ability to write simply amazing first chapters that draw you into the story immediately and Night Souls is no exception. The action starts fast and furious and continues throughout the book to the epic ending.

If you’ve read Black Cathedral you will be familiar with Department 18 and the people who work there. If you haven’t read Black Cathedral you will still be able to enjoy Night Souls, but I suggest you do as Maynard and Sims characters and their relationships are quite intricate.

Night Souls starts out with Department 18 investigating what they think is poltergeist activity. They couldn’t have been more wrong. From the first chapter Maynard & Sims weave a supernatural tale of a species that have existed with and intertwined with humans to survive by feeding upon us. They keep us as pets and even have set up “restaurants” with humans as the menu. That’s about all the details I’ll give as I don’t want to spoil your enjoyment when you read Night Souls.

Maynard and Sims writing is crisp and the storyline intense. The action never lets up. You will want to read this book in one sitting. Maynard and Sims fictional worlds and supernatural occurrences would not work if not for the depth of their characters that populate their stories. Their characters are well developed and believable, adding a touch of realism to their work.

Maynard and Sims books just keep getting better and better, and Night Souls might just be their best yet. You are doing yourself a disservice if you do not give their books a try. I can only hope that there are more adventures in store for the intrepid souls of Department 18.
