Book Review: Deadfall by Shaun Jeffrey

Ah…zombies, you either love em’ or hate em’.  What is it about zombies that give them such a fanatical following and such an undeniable hatred. I for one love zombies. I was introduced to my first zombie at the tender age of 13 at a midnight showing of the king of zombie movies Night Of The Living Dead. This was quite an eye opening experience for me, I literally couldn’t sleep for days after that and loved every second of it.

I received an email from Shaun Jeffrey a while back asking if I would read and review his new book Deadfall and of course being the zombie lover that I am I immediately said yes.

“Kill them or convert them – either way we win.”

A team of mercenaries race to an abandoned mining village to rescue two children held hostage by rogue ex-soldiers. But the kidnappers are a ruse, the real threat more terrifying than any of them could imagine.

Aided by a couple of unsuspecting eco-warriors, mercenary team leader Amber Redgrave must fight to survive against foes that don’t sleep and don’t feel pain.

Now as the body count rises, so do the stakes, and when the dead won’t stay dead, there’s going to be hell to pay.

Zombie stories have been done over and over and over again, some good and some really bad. Luckily for me Deadfall is one of the good. Shaun puts a different twist on the zombie mythos and pulls it off with a fast paced story line, interesting characters and a couple of twists that I did not see coming.

He also shows some restraint on the bloodletting, choosing instead to rely on the atmosphere of the story. Not to worry though zombie fans, you can’t have zombies without some flesh tearing and eating, and Shaun does have it just not as much as some others. Over the top gore and gruel for shock value never cuts it for me, if it is used tastefully in the context of the story I feel it has much more of an impact and Shaun does this beautifully.

If I had one complaint (without giving too much of a spoiler) it would have to be that some of the scenes in the laboratory with two civilians just didn’t ring true to me in the context of the story.  There was plenty of hair raising, tension filled scenes taking place but the overall feel just didn’t feel right to me, if that makes any sense to you.

The ending of the story was awesome, I won’t spoil it for anyone, but I didn’t see it coming and it was brilliant in my opinion. One scene in particular really blew me away.

Don’t let my minor little quibble discourage you from reading “Deadfall”. If you are a lover of the zombie genre this is one book that is a must for your collection and I wholeheartedly recommend it.
