Bousman on Celebrating Mother’s Day

Director Darren Lynn Bousman has been hard at work filming his reimagining of the cult classic, Mother’s Day, and in a recent post on his blog, provided us with an update. Bousman reveals that he is nearly done editing, and has been having difficulty in cutting any scenes due to the strength of the performances.

Coming from the director of Saw II and Repo! The Genetic Opera, it’d be fair to expect another gory slog, but Bousman assures us that this venture is more “thriller” than “horror.”

“That being said – Mother’s Day is a violent movie, but it contains the type of violence that lives in the background, not fights for attention in foreground,” said Bousman. “Mother’s Day is the type of film that punches you in the gut, due in large part [to] the amazing performances given from the cast.”

It’s easy for the director of a film to praise the work of his own cast, but Bousman’s gushing over Rebecca De Mornay’s performance seems so sincere that it’s hard not to be enticed.

The original 1980 exploitation film on which the new version is based followed the annual camping trip of three female friends. Their trip quickly turns sour when they run into two devilish punks who, along with their domineering mother, violate and torment the women.

Although the original plan was to fast-track the film to be released on Mother’s Day, impending competition from big studio flicks like Shrek 4 and Iron Man 2 deterred Bousman and company, who independently financed the film. They are just beginning the search for a distributor, but Bousman feels confident that the film will see release and do good business despite not opening on its titular day.

Once the picture is picked up by a distributor, the process of releasing a trailer will move ahead, and until then you can keep tabs on Bousman’s blog for potential further updates.
