Avatar and The Blind Side Break Box Office Records

AvatarFor the third straight week Avatar had a titanic showing at the box office. Adding $68.4 million to its domestic box office Avatar has lived up to the hype and then some with a global box office take of over $1 billion in just three weeks.

The following six spots were virtually unchanged from last weekend. Sherlock Holmes retained 2nd with $36.6 million, followed by the Alvin and the Chipmunks Squeakquel with $35.1 million. It’s Complicated was next with $18.8 million. And The Blind Side rounded out the top five with $11.9 million. The Blind Side is the first film with a female lead to cross the $200 million mark. Sandra Bullock should be expecting a hefty pay raise for her next picture.

Up in the Air dropped a bit but retained the 6th spot with $10.7 million. The Princess and the Frog was up 9% with $9.8 million, raising its 6 week total to just over $85 million. Did You Hear About the Morgan’s? jumped a spot with $4.9 million.

And rounding out the 9th and 10th spots was a virtual tie between Nine and Invictus, both with $3.9 million; with Invictus narrowly edging past Nine.

Though I don’t expect Daybreakers to rake in loads of cash this coming weekend I’m certainly looking forward to it. Hope everyone had a safe New Year, here’s to 2010.
