Well, it sounded too good to be true – and it turns out that it is. Rachel McAdams won’t be slipping into black leather to portray Black Cat in Spiderman 4, as she told EW yesterday. Reports that the actress had been cast in the next spider-sequel are “a total rumor,” she said.
Of course, deprived of a rumor, the internet will quickly churn out another, and almost the second the news came out, it was reported that Julia Stiles had called a New York casting company about Spiderman 4. This, of course, led to renewed speculation on Black Cat casting, now with Stiles at the center. It’s not definite that she’ll even be in the movie, let alone in that specific part, but it’s the closest we’ve got to solid fact now. Regardless, everyone seems to agree that the character will be making an appearance in the movie.
Some more casting news our spider-sense has detected: the studio has put out a casting call for a “2 or 3 year old boy,” described as “Caucasian with RED HAIR, an adorable toddler with an engaging personality.” They’re looking for a little red-haired kid… does this mean Peter and Mary Jane are having a baby? I certainly hope not… the comic’s editorial staff has gone to some pretty extensive lengths to keep from “aging” the main character (even going so far as to toss logic out the window and have Pete make a deal with the devil that erased his marriage to MJ), so this certainly wouldn’t be in the spirit of the source material. If this is the case, I hope Sam Raimi’s ready for the ire of fanboys everywhere. Or, well, more of it.
