McG Won't Go 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea

Nautilus-1It’s always nice to start off the morning with a little good news. As it turns out, Variety reported last night that Disney’s proposed Captain Nemo: 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, which was tentatively scheduled to start production in February, has been put on indefinite shore leave.

It would be nice to think that this is a sign that little-movies-that-could like District 9 and Paranormal Activity are changing the studio’s “spend more money, make more money” mindset. But Disney says the focus will remain on big-budget event films, like John Carter of Mars, Tron Legacy, and – groan – ANOTHER Pirates of the Caribbean, which will begin production in May.

Captain Nemo was set to be directed by McG, who has as many mindless event films as letters in his name. There was no official or even tentative casting, though the director had thrown around Will Smith’s name as a possible star (you may notice that Will Smith is in no way Indian; I’m sure the studio would have been happy to strap a turban on him anyway).

Anyway, I’m glad this project seems, for the moment, to have sunk. This review of an early draft of the script is probably a pretty good indicator of what geek reaction would have been. The reaction of the general moviegoing audience, of course, would have been to fork over their money and look at the thing giddily for two hours whilst putting greasy movie theater popcorn into their faces.

And let’s not forget the last time Captain Nemo came to the big screen.

Huh. Actually, let’s totally forget that. It’s better that way.
