One of the many movies touted at AFM this year was Give ‘Em Hell, Malone, an over-the-top detective story dripping with noir. I haven’t seen the flick – but I have seen the trailer, and that’s really making me want to see the flick.
I love film noir in general – and postmodern, overwrought film noir’s even better. So, while we’re waiting for a Sin City 2 that may never come, I’m more than happy to bide my time with this little picture. Especially with a cast like it has – Ving Rhames has been among my favorites for an intimidating badass villain ever since Pulp Fiction. And I enjoy Thomas Jane in pretty much everything – every time I see The Mist, he has me cheering all the way through (until the end, when I’m feeling hollow and empty inside. That’s what the end of that movie does). While I think The Punisher is a travesty, both as a standalone film and a comic adaptation, Jane does a great job in the title role. Even that guest spot he did on Arrested Development, as himself – one of the most memorable guest appearances in a series that was loaded with ‘em.
So, in other words, this movie offers lots of gunshots, beautiful women, liquor, overwritten dialogue, and some kind of absurd premise surrounding “the meaning of love.” And that’s all just from the trailer. It’s gonna be great.
