Scrooge A Bit Of A Humbug With Audiences

a-christmas-carolPerhaps it’s because of the countless times Charles Dickens’ classic tale of redemption has been visited upon us in film and television adaptations, but movie audiences did not turn out in overwhelming numbers to see Jim Carrey and company digitized into plastic looking motion capture 3D. The Robert Zemeckis directed A Christmas Carol seized $31 million this weekend in 3,683 theatres. With a price tag of $200 million it will be interesting to see what type of business Carol does over the Holiday season.

Michael Jackson’s This Is It dropped 39.7% it’s second weekend, dancing up $14 million in sales. The film, based on rehearsal footage from what would have been MJ’s 50 show run in London has made $57.8 million. Originally scheduled for a two week run the film has been extended until Thanksgiving.

The Men Who Stare at Goats, starring George Clooney, Ewen McGregor, Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey set the remote viewing skills of the Jedi Warriors of the U.S. Army’s First Earth Battalion on the box office and conjured $13.3 million in ticket sales.

The 4th Kind, another sci-fi/horror film allegedly based on true events, posted a modest debut with $12.5 million. Following was this year’s made for nothing box office smash Paranormal Activity with $8.6 million. Down 47.5% the demon possessed girl friend picture has a seven week haunt of $97.4 million. And rounding out the mid-list trio of horror was The Box with a disappointing debut of $7.8 million.

Couples Retreat dropped a minuscule 0.5% and added $6.4 million to Universals coffers. The comedy has grossed $95.4 million in five weeks. Following closely was Law Abiding Citizen with $6.1 million.

Where the Wild Things Are and Astro Boy, two financially disappointing children’s films on their way out of the top ten, round out this weeks box office with $4.2 million and $2.5 million respectively.

Stay tuned next week when director Roland Emmerich unleashes his latest end of the world picture 2012 on theatres. I wonder what kind of a fallout shelter this guys built for himself?
