Double Feature: CITIZEN KANE: Everyone knows that Charles Foster Kane was a bad, bad man. Not Muhammad Ali “bad”, like mass murderer, sociopath “bad”. In fact, it could be argued, was one of Hollywood’s original famous monsters. The man had more power, ruined more lives, and bathed in pure evil in ways that supernatural creatures never even dreamed. It seems only fitting that use this, our contest, to officially name Charles Foster Kane a true Famous Monster.
THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS, 1942, Warner Bros., 88 min. Director Orson Welles’ poetic, tragic adaptation of Booth Tarkington’s novel, centering on the fall of one wealthy family, with Stanley Cortez’s dynamic camerawork providing a panorama of turn-of-the-century America and the decay of the old aristocracy. Not as monsterish, but still a great film.
