Let it be known that I am a Michael Jackson fan. Growing up in the 80′s it would be difficult not to be. Let it also be said that I feel the man that was MJ died in the early 90′s and ever since he has been a vessel for some sort of alien parasite that caused his body to turn white and wither to the weight of a seven year old boy, making him a tad bit crazy in the process. I think it fitting that Michael Jackson’s This Is It topped the box office this Halloween weekend. Michael, like us monster fans, truly loved Halloween; what better tribute to one of the greatest performers of out time than to posthumously score $21.3 million at the box office. Actually the exec’s at Sony scored $21.3 million over the weekend, capitalising on Jackson’s death on June 25th. The film has grossed $32.5 million since last Tuesday night.
The rest of the weekend box office, though up from the same weekend last year, was unimpressive. Paranormal Activity dropped to number two, adding $16.5 million to it’s haunted coffers. Activity has grossed an amazing $84.7 million in six weeks.
Gerard Butler is a bad ass, and I have to say that after seeing Law Abiding Citizen I was extremely disappointed that the powers that be opted for the predictable, happy ending rather than staying true to the story and the message it was trying to get across. Either way the Overture release grossed $7.3 million this weekend and passed it’s $50 million budget.
Universals Couples Retreat dove into the fourth spot with $6 million. Retreat, up a spot from last week, has a four week total of $86.6 million
Saw VI dropped a disastrous 60.6% from it’s debut weekend, grossing a despicable $5.5 million. I can only hope this is the last Saw I see in theatres ever again.
You thought Saw had a huge decline, Where the Wild Things Are dropped 63.8% and has completely tanked at the box office grossing $5 million this weekend for a six week total of $61.8 million.
The Stepfather also jumped up a spot this weekend. The Screen Gems remake grossed $3.5 million, raising it’s total gross to $24.7 million.
The failing Astro Boy dropped to eighth with $3.03 million. Another flop, the Summit Entertainment release has grossed a week $10.8 million and boasted a $65 million budget. Poor Summit, at least they still have New Moon to look forward to-insert a man cringe here.
Amelia soared into the top ten after opening at number eleven last week. The bio pic, also from Summit, grossed $3 million.
Closing out the top ten was Cirque du Freak: The Vampires Assistant with $2.8 million.
That’s all for Halloween kids. Robert Zemeckis and Jim Carrey start off the Holiday season next week with the 8,531st film version of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol in Disney Digital 3D and IMAX. Humbug.
