The Call of Cthulhu Part 1

Key 19th-Century authors like Poe, Stoker, Shelley and Wells provided ready material for the new medium of motion pictures, but two towering 20th-Century horror writers have not fared as well.  Hollywood’s uneven record with Steven King is the stuff of legend (and some chagrin), while the rarity of adaptations of the work of H. P. Lovecraft is truly puzzling.

When Sean Branney and Andrew Leman of the HPLHS brought Lovecraft’s famous story “The Call of Cthulhu” to the screen, they opted to do so in the form such a film would have taken had it been made the year of the tale’s publication (1927).  The result is an extraordinary new silent film, lovingly detailed and ‘retro-fitted’, that suspends enough disbelief to support not only the classic horror story but also the period film style.
