That’s right, folks, it’s actually happening: There will be a fourth Mad Max movie, and Mel Gibson will not be involved. Choosing to eschew the “Indiana Jones 4 philosophy,” which reads, “he’s WAY too old, but screw it! We’ll make it anyway,” director George Miller has brought some younger blood into the franchise with the casting of Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy.
Americans know Theron; she’s been in Hollywood so long, she’s practically one of us. Hardy’s a bit, um, hard-er to place. You may recognize him from his roles in Black Hawk Down, Star Trek: Nemesis, or Guy Ritchie’s latest, Rocknrolla. Soon enough, though, chances are you’ll remember him from Mad Max: Fury Road.
Miller, who brought us the original Mad Max and has written and directed every installment since, has scheduled filming to commence in Australia next August. Sure, he’s still onboard, but can the film succeed without Mel Gibson? Only time will tell. I’ll be rushing out to see it regardless, because, you know, it’s Mad Max.
