Couples Retreat Tops Weekend Box Office

Couples Retreat CastMovies like Couples Retreat are one of the main reasons why I would like to be an actor. Not only are you getting paid to pretend, but you’re pretending on location in Bora-Bora, Tahiti and French Polynesia. I can see Vince Vaughn and John Favreau sitting around trying to come up with movie ideas, and then, blammo! lets make a movie in paradise, and why don’t we hire all our friends to come make the movie with us and it’ll be one long vacation. Directed by Peter “You’ll Shoot Your Eye Out” Billingsley, Couples Retreat scored the top spot at the box office this weekend with $34.2 million.

Dropping a spot but still going strong was Zombieland. The zombie comedy-and it is funny-had a 39.4% drop with a take of $14.8 million.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs also held firm, with a decrease of 24.1%. The Sony 3D animated picture cooked up $11.5 million this weekend, raising its total to $96.2 million. Cloudy should pass its $100 million budget by next weekend.

Though not number one, perhaps the biggest movie of the weekend was the very independent Paranormal Activity. When I first heard the promotions for this movie I was a bit leery because of the comparison being made to the god awful and overrated Blair Witch Project, but happily Paranormal Activity was nothing like Witch. I very much enjoyed this little movie that is going to blow up in the coming weeks. Playing on a mere 160 screens the film grossed $7.9 million, with a per-screen average of $44,163. Not bad for a movie that cost just $11,000.

On the second weekend of it’s two week run Toy Story and Toy Story 2 in 3D was next with $7.7 million. The Pixar re-release has added $22.6 million to the Disney coffers. Honestly I’d like to get to the theatre to see these two in 3D but there are so many other movies I want to see that I’m not sure I’ll make it, but you can bet I’m looking forward to Toy Story 3 next summer.

The bottom half goes a little something like…

Surrogates continues its bomb with $4.2 million, followed by The Invention of Lying-one of the movies on my list to watch-with $3.3 million. Whip It was eighth with $2.8 million. And rounding out the bottom two were Capitalism: A Love Story with $2.6 million and Fame right behind with $2.5 million.

As always for the complete statistical list of all things head over to Box Office Mojo. Until next week you crazy kids.
