Lit Review: Depraved

Depravedby Bryan Smith

“Visitors are more than welcome in the isolated rural community of Hopkins Bend. The town needs them for their annual sacrifices…and entertainment. Now outsiders have stumbled into the town’s traps. Some will be held for their captors’ perverse, degrading amusement, but some will face a far more gruesome end at the yearly Holiday Feast. The townspeople hope their unholy ritual will protect them from the curse that befell the Kincher family. For more than a century the Kinchers have been changing, mutating, becoming gradually less human. And at the center of it all lies the dark secret, the malignant evil that controls Hopkins Bend and has made its residents truly… DEPRAVED”

Depraved, the new excursion into extreme horror by Bryan Smith will leave you visibly shaken. It is a blood soaked journey into a backwoods town with some of the most despicable people ever put to the written word.

It is violent, bloody, decadently twisted and makes the rednecks in Deliverance look like choir boys.

Bryan has taken the small secluded town with interbred, backward neanderthals (if that isn’t bad enough) scenario and stuck a curse right in the middle of it.

I have to say I had a hell of a lot of fun reading this book. The characters in Hopkins Bend are sick, demented, twisted and yes…depraved. You have mutants, torture, sex, cannibalism, a strip bar, corrupt police and an evil entity controlling everything. How can that not be fun?

The main characters Bryan throws into the mix are varied and just as much fun as the mutants. The lengths they go to, to survive this nightmare are fantastic and in some cases just as sick and twisted as the townsfolk.

Bryan trolls the deepest depths of humanity and manages to get you thinking. That would I do if this were me? And that my friends is what makes this book for me.

How do they handle what is thrown at them, how does it change them and what will they be like if they survive?

I especially loved the ending of the book. You will get no spoiler from me. You will have to go to your local bookstore or go to Dorchester Publishing and get a copy for yourself.

If you are a fan of white knuckle in your face over the top horror this is a must for your collection and I highly recommend it.
