For the second week Sony’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs claimed the top spot at the box office, trumping new releases Surrogates, Fame and Pandorum. Estimates have Cloudy with $24.6 million, down a remarkably low 18.8% from its opening weekend. The $100 million budgeted 3D animated picture has a two week take of $60 million.
Although the Bruce Willis lead Surrogates managed $15 million in its debut, the sci-fi picture looks like a long shot for being anywhere near a hit. Don’t look for the film to make back its $80 million budget, though I will be watching this film soon.
Fame(2009) aint gonna live forever, opening with $10 million. Again, not being a fan of most television to feature film adaptations I couldn’t see the point in making Fame into a movie. Other than my sister, who watched that show all the time when we were kids, much to my horror because back then there was only one TV in the house, I can’t imagine who would want to see this movie. Maybe all of our sisters who tortured us with it way back when, but that’s it.
The Informant! starring Matt Damon took in $6.9 million it’s sophomore weekend, raising its two week total to $20.9 million.
Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself took in $4.7 million and was down 51.9% in it’s third week of release.
Opening in the sixth spot was the sci-fi/horror film Pandorum. Apparently not many people were interested in another “monsters” loose on a spaceship picture, although I can’t wait to see it. The film made $4.4 million. And if you plan on seeing it get to the theatres soon or you’ll be watching it on DVD.
Love Happens happened to follow with $4.3 million.
Men love Megan Fox’s body, but her new film Jennifer’s Body not so much, nor does anyone else for that matter. The Fox release dropped 49.1% managing a week $3.5 million. The $16 million budgeted film has grossed $12.3 million in two weeks.
Falling into ninth was 9. The animated film from Focus Features scored $2.8 million. It amazes me that this beautifully crafted picture had a mere $30 million budget. When you look at most other computer animated films such as Cloudy with budgets $100 million or more it makes you wonder where the excess money goes. As with the case of District 9′s $30 million budget in relation to say the new Transformers, where the District 9 effects looked ten times better than the later which had a budget of over $200 million.
Rounding out the top ten was Inglorious Basterds with $2.3 million. The film has made $114 million in five weeks.
Again, for all the crazy statistical info drop by Box Office Mojo. Until next week you crazy kids.
