Latest Harry Potter Casts Giant Spell On Box Office

Aside from a snide remark here and there I try not to go into to much of my personal opinions when writing the weekend box office report, but I have to say that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was one of the most disappointing Potters yet. How the script even got approval from J.K. Rowling is beyond me. That being said, the sixth film in one of the most successful franchises in film (and literary) history conjured up an amazing $79.4 million this weekend, and has grossed $159.6 million since debuting last Tuesday/Wednesday at midnight. The Warner Brothers release had the highest grossing midnight opening ever with $22.2 million, surpassing The Dark Knight’s $18.5 million midnight start.

Holding on to the second spot was Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs from Fox. The 3D animated comedy bit $17.7 million out of the domestic box office and was down 35.9% from last weekend. The $90 million picture has a three week take of $152 million.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen dropped 43.2% with $13.7 million. In four weeks the Paramount/DreamWorks sequel you either love or you hate (I loved it by the way) has totaled $363.8 million.

Bruno managed a disastrous second weekend, dropping 72.7% and barely squeezing into the fourth spot with $8.374 million. Maybe next time Sasha Baron Cohen will come up with something less like the last something he came up with. Bruno…Borat…I mean come on.

The Hangover rests in limbo right under Bruno-yes, I know that sounds gross considering the genre of the two films-with $8.315 million. Down 16.3% The Hangover has managed an astronomical $235.8 million in seven weeks.

Another small movie that could, The Proposal, engaged the box office for $8.2 million in its fifth week of release. The Buena Vista romantic comedy of the summer has a take of $128 million. When final numbers are announced any of these three films could easily change spots on the top ten chart, but we’ll just go with what we’ve got so far.

Universals Public Enemies continues it’s steady decline with $7.5 million. Down 45% the Johnny Depp/Christian Bale period piece has a domestic take of $79.4 million and just over $95 million when world wide markets are factored in.

Pixars Up continued to float in eighth place with $3.1 million, a drop of 33.3%.

My Sisters Keeper from Warner Brothers had $2.8 million and has grossed $41.5 million in four weeks.

And I love You Beth Cooper was close behind with $2.6 million. Down 45.8% and with only $10.2 million total this film is as good as gone.

Until next week you crazy kids…Comic-Con awaits.
