Dimension Films to Release 18 Direct-to-Video Pictures in 2009

History tends to repeat itself and according to John Fithian, president of the National Association of Theatre Owners in America, the current state of the country will likely hyper boost sales at the Box Office. He cites, “In the past four decades there have been seven recession years in this country, and the box office has climbed strongly in five of those years. The strongest of those years was the most recent, in 2001, when US box office receipts rose by $650 million.

According to Variety, it looks like the Weinstein Co. is aiming to be a quick supplier for movie-hungry fans. Dimension Films is greenlighting 18 direct-to-video motion pictures for release in 2009. Each picture is budgeted at between $3 million to $6 million, and will wrap filming by the end of this year—all films are scheduled for 2009 release.

Bob Weinstein explains that most of the films will be “sequels, prequels, remakes or spinoff of TWC/Dimension titles, and could debut in a particular ancillary arena—DVD, VOD, TV or the Web—depending on a closer look as they near release. There are so many non-theatrical platforms to watch movies from nowadays, I think it’s important to appeal to all moviegoing experiences.”

Some of the titles to be released will include: Pulse 2, a Children of the Corn extension, Feast II, Hell Ride 2, Sloppy Seconds, Last Man Standing, a zombie film Dead by Daylight, and Midnight Man series.

I’m pretty sure “Sloppy Seconds” is the subtitle of Feast II, and that “Children of the Corn” is a remake (’cause, y’know, we really need *that* one). “Last Man Standing”–not a remake of the Bruce Willis/Walter Hill gangster shoot-em-up, I take it? Y’know, if Dimension’s looking to remake stuff, why not cut a deal with Harris Comics and launch a new Vampirella movie to remove the bad taste of that Corman debacle from everyone’s mouths?
