Slamdance Fest Goes Online

Posted by dominie in General, News on September 22nd, 2008

The festival “by filmmakers for filmmakers” is its claim to fame.  Each year, the Slamdance Film Festival competes in the same arena as Sundance in what its supporters consider as a truer representation of independent filmmaking.

For those film lovers who are unfortunate enough to miss the annual hurrah, Slamdance has partnered up with Indieroad to bring the 2009 fest’s films to you!  That’s right, to you via streaming online videos in the comfort of your own bed, couch, or whatever your choice of gluttony.

Films that opt for the online option will be available two hours after its festival preem for $9, of which $3 will go to the filmmaker, and the remaining $6 will be delegated between Slamdance and Indieroad. “It’s a way of empowering the filmmaker at a time when many are still dependent on a broken distribution system. This way, we are making these films available to everyone and taking our festival worldwide.” explained Slamdance exec Peter Baxter. In further explanation, Indieroad creative director Vince Di Pierro said, “Because it’s a stream and not a download we’ll have the ability to pull the films immediately if a distributor wants to buy it.”

In related news, The Hamptons International Film Festival announced a similar feature in collaboration with SnagFilms and Sundance has joined with Apple to offer some of its shorts on iTunes.

The 2009 Slamdance Film Festival runs January 15-23, 2009 in Park City, UT.  Be sure to check the website then at indieroad.net/slamdance for the quickest way to support our indie filmmakers and genre films.

Thanks for the shout-out on our Hampton’s Extras (a unique extension of the Festival online) and concurrent premieres there - but I want to be clear about the substantial differences between our approach and any others: We are free-to-consumers; we make films infinitely sharable via widget “virtual movie theaters” - a huge benefit to any individual with a facebook page or blogger; and we link viewing with activism and support related charities with every film. SnagFilms shares ad revenue with filmmakers & upstreams viewers to the filmmaker’s DVD source for even more revenue - and we drive charitable donations. This all is very different from a download viewing service - we are a social media service and platform.
