The Force Unleashed: The Movie?

Posted by dominie in Comics, Films, Games, News on September 30th, 2008

Speaking of the crossovers between videogames and movies, the new hit video game The Force Unleashed may have potential to undergo this treatment. According to The Los Angeles Times who caught up with Haden Blackman, the leader behind The Force Unleashed, “It’s not impossible.” The video game, which hit stands earlier this month sold over 1-million units in its first five days. Already Dark Horse has created and released the graphic novel for The Force Unleashed, of which Blackman penned the script for. If we are still following the trend from graphic novels transformations to movies, the outlook seems likely a motion picture adaptation is in the near future.

“Never say never. George [Lucas] has looked to tell new ‘Star Wars’ stories through the games and with the entire Star Wars Expanded Universe, and then he has also shown a willingness to let the characters come into the films. Look at Aayla Secura, a creation in the [Dark Horse] comic books who became part of the theatrical films.”

The Force Unleashed takes place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, interjecting scenes we have up until now been unfortunately denied. It tells the backstory of Vader’s secret apprentice, who was guided in the way of the Sith to terminate any remaining Jedis who stand in the way of his ultimate plan against the Emperor.

Let the Right One In Remake Announced

Posted by dominie in Films, News, Reviews on September 30th, 2008

Last week Hammer and Overture films announced an English-language remake of Swedish director Tomas Alfredson’s Let the Right One In, the original coming of age vampire film that hits theaters October 24.  According to Bloody-Disgusting, Cloverfield helmer Matt Reeves will direct the remake, and Alfredson’s thoughts don’t come with open arms.

“Remakes should be made of movies that aren’t very good, that gives you the chance to fix whatever has gone wrong,” Alfredson tells Moviezine. “I’m very proud of my movie and think it’s great, but the Americans might be of an other opinion. The saddest thing for me would be to see that beautiful story made into something mainstream. I don’t like to whine, but of course – if you’d spent years on painting a picture, you’d hate to hear buzz about a copy even before your vernissage!”

If you’ve been following our coverage of Let the Right One In (review), you will understand how furious this news makes me. I’ll agree that an English-language remake may expose the film to millions more fans, but potentially sacrificing everything we have loved about the movie seems too great of a risk (seems likely the way Hollywood is nabbing remake rights). Can we not read subtitles anymore? If the film gets proper exposure (something Magnet Releasing may want to reconsider), the film could be a potential masterpiece even in the states. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon ring a bell? Alfredson’s stunning success in the film comes from being subtle and leaving more to the viewers’ imagination for the scare, something we used to see in the good ol’ Hollywood days.

RelicQuest Coming to Sci-Fi Channel

Posted by dominie in General, News on September 30th, 2008

Sci-Fi must have thought of a gentleman with a fedora hat and a whip? No, we are not talking about a new Indiana Jones project escaped from the creative hands of the LucasFilm, we are talking about the new investigative series that Sci-Fi channel has just approved, RelicQuest (still a working title). The channel’s commitment is for six episodes, each spanning one hour that will be slated at the beginning of October and premiere in early 2009.

RelicQuest is an action and adventure series that travels the globe in search of historical relics and artifacts. The documentary opts for a “professor-free zone,” speaking with locals, smugglers, traders, tomb raiders, dealers, and the like instead.

Bruce Burgess, the documentary filmmaker that will host the show, is for sure familiar with the matter. With such titles under his belt as: Bloodline (The DaVinci Code for real), The Ark of the Covenant Revealed (told you, a man, a fedora and a whip) and Dreamland: Area 51 (did I mentioned a man, a fedora and… yes you got it), Burgess seems to be the perfect Virgilio, to guide the viewer in the maze of mysteries and legends that surround so many events in our history.

RelicQuest is being produced by Bluebook Films for Sci Fi with Rene Barnett and again Bruce Burgess as executive producers. For a detailed list of Burgess’ traveling itinerary, see the original post at IESB.net here.

Zack Snyder Signs With EA to Make Video Games

Posted by dominie in Films, Games, News on September 30th, 2008

Director of Famous Monsters, Simone Bartesaghi, tipped us on some exciting news today. If the trend persists, I see a potential rivalry between both arenas that could revolutionize our standards in quality films and video games!

It’s no longer a matter of crossing bridges, video games and movies are becoming one big industry with players shifting from one side to the other. It started with video games being so good in the story telling arena that filmmakers wanted to tell those stories to a broader audience (Silent Hill, Resident Evil) and now visionary directors are crossing the line to tell their stories through the powerful engaging technology of the video games.

This territory will not be unfamiliar to EA, who has already been in collaboration with Steven Spielberg in a development deal that recently launched Boom Blox for the Nintendo Wii, and currently working on various other developments.

Another notable crossover includes director James Wan (Saw) who directed the trailer for the video game Dead Space. Now it’s time for Mr. Zack (300) Snyder to join the video game world. The director of the highly expected and controversy Watchmen has signed a deal to develop three original games for Electronic Arts. EA will own the intellectual properties, with the option for Snyder’s Cruel & Unusual Films banner to produce film adaptations using the properties. In an interview at the Comic Con 2008, Snyder said that he is very excited about this new venture and that “a dialogue needs to be established between filmmakers and game producers.”

Terror Tidbits

Posted by dominie in Films, News on September 29th, 2008

MGM has slated A Perfect Getaway for release on March 13, 2009, one year after its production began.  Written and directed by David Twohy (Pitch Black, The Chronicles of Riddick) for Relativity Media, A Perfect Getaway is the story of a newlywed couple who vacations to Hawaii for their honeymoon “getaway.”  Unbeknownst to them, it will be their worst nightmare when they meet two hikers who turn out to be vicious killers.  The film stars Timothy Olyphant, Steve Zahn, Milla Jovovich, and Kiele Sanchez.

According to Variety, arthouse director Kenneth Branagh (Henry V) has been in talks to direct Marvel Comics’ next live-active film, Thor, to be released in summer 2010.  Thor follows a disabled medical student Donald Blake, who has an alter ego as the hammer-wielding Norse god Thor.  Similar to Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, Thor will be funded by Marvel using their $500 million credit facility through Merrill Lynch.  The Iron Man sequel will also go through the same treatment.

My Bloody Valentine US One-Sheet

Posted by dominie in Films, News on September 29th, 2008

Lionsgate released the US version of the one-sheet for My Bloody Valentine 3-D today.  The new version has been toned down from the UK release, possibly due to MPAA ratings, but the concept remains the same.

Starring Jaime King, Jensen Ackles, Kerr Smith, Edi Gathegi, Kevin Tighe and Megan Boone, My Bloody Valentine 3-D tells the story of “Tom (Ackle’s) return to his hometown on the tenth anniversary of the Valentine’s night massacre that claimed the lives of 22 people. Instead of a homecoming, however, Tom finds himself suspected of committing the murders, and it seems like his old flame (King) is the only one who believes he’s innocent.”

Directed by Patrick Lussier (White Noise 2: The Light) from a screenplay by Todd Farmer and Zane Smith, My Bloody-Valentine 3-D hits theaters January 16, 2009.

And without wasting anytime, Lussier told Bloody Disgusting earlier this month, “I think I’d be lying if I said Todd and I haven’t had several conversations about [a My Bloody Valentine sequel],” says Lussier. “You know one of the things that we’ve really enjoyed in this process was the fact that we had such a great cast…or the fact that the characters that survive and how they survive at the end of the story, are incredibly intriguing. There is such an amazingly iconic villain [also]. All those things entice both Todd and I tremendously. And if we were to be so lucky, knock on wood, by all means we would love to be considered for that.”
