MGM Slates Speedy Release in Competition with Lionsgate

Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Goners, Serenity) is teaming up with Drew Goddard (Cloverfield, Lost, Alias, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel) again for MGM’s Cabin in the Woods. Whedon first announced the news about his new thriller to MTV in early July and MGM acquired the script with Goddard to direct the following day. Now, MGM has now announced that Woods is slated for theatrical release on October 23, 2009—just one week before Lionsgate’s Saw VI scheduled for October 30th.
Whedon and Goddard first worked on Buffy the Vampire Slayer together and then on its spinoff Angel, both of which were highly successful. In an interview with MTV, Goddard didn’t give any details about the plot but did say, “It’s genius, it’s funny… It’s got a harder and darker edge, but it’s also got classic Whedon qualities. It’ll rip your heart out and be heartfelt at the same time… There’s a reason the title is so straightforward. It’s its own sub-genre, the cabin in the woods, and this is sort of our take on it. It’s fresh and new.”
