It was first announced nearly a year ago that master stop-motion animator Ray Harryhausen planned to produce the first Edgar Allen Poe adaptation in stop-motion. Ladies and gentleman, the time has finally come. The Pit and the Pendulum, directed by Marc Lougee, is a seven minute short based on Edgar Allen Poe’s 1842 tale of the same title in old-school stop-motion animation. The story is about a man who is condemned to death during the Spanish Inquisition for his beliefs. His method of death was unbeknownst to him, but he will soon find out.

The Pit and the Pendulum will debut on DVD at this month’s Festival of Fear in Toronto, ON, Canada. Dread Central tells us the DVD will include:

  • A tour of the Foley Studio at urban Post Production
  • 5.1 surround mixing session and breakdown for the film
  • Production stills
  • Storyboards

  • Easter eggs
