Everyone knew The Dark Knight was going to open huge, the only question was going to be how huge. Now we know. Counting the midnight haul on Friday, the film took in an estimated $155,340,000, easily surpassing Spider-Man 3’s $151.1 and becoming the biggest three day opening film of all time.
Other genre films included Transsiberian’s $35,200 opening on just two screens. It garnered good reviews and should expand its rollout.
Hancock grabbed $14,000,000 for a cumulative total of $191,504,000 after three weeks. In its second week, Journey to the Center of the Earth found $11,910,000, totaling $43,074,000. Also in its second week was Hellboy II: The Golden Army but it declined a huge 70.9%, scoring a total of $56,447,000 so it will wind up surpassing the original but how high is now in question.
Pixar’s Wall*E compacted another $9,813,000, totaling $182,476,000 after four weeks. The other summer animated film, 20th Century Fox’s Space Chimps was poorly reviewed and opened in seventh place with a disappointing $7,350,000. Similarly, Meet Dave continues to underperform and is fading fast, taking in just $1,635,000 in its second weekend. Both are tough blows for the studio which should rebound when X-Files 2 opens next Friday.
Wanted nabbed $5,097,000 and its total of $123,347,000 continues to fuel talk of the sequel.
The old-timers are gently winding up their runs with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull experiencing its first under $1 million weekend, earning an estimated $970,000, pushing its total to $312,584,000. Iron Man, already in second run venues, welded an additional $435,000, totaling $314,360,000. Paramount’s other Marvel film, The Incredible Hulk brought home $623,000, now totaling up to $131,764,000, still under its $150 million budget.
