John Carpenter is Scared Straight

Posted by bob in Films, News on July 31st, 2008

John CarpenterJohn Carpenter’s eagerly awaited next film may well be a thriller without horror elements.  According to iF Magazine, Carpenter will direct Nicholas Cage in Scared Straight for Nu Image/Millennium Films.

If the film sounds familiar, it’s because it had been previously announced as coming from New Line and director Rob Cohen but it wound up floundering and being made available.  The film features juvenile delinquents trapped inside a prison during a “Scared Straight” program when a large-scale riot breaks out. Cage plays an inmate who winds up protecting the kids from the carnage. So this is more than Halloween territory.

WETA Helps Around The Home

Posted by bob in Films, News on July 31st, 2008

The Home is a small film from producer Steven Schneider (Paranormal Activity) and director Kristoffer Aaron Morgan (Blind).  The story features a firefighter who is sent to a nursing home to get over psychological issues raised after nearly dying during a fire. As he settles in, he first thinks his fellow patients are all psychotic but then realizes the things that they fear are all too real.

What’s interesting about this horror tale is that the creatures that prey on the patients are being designed by WETA, usually known for high budget projects from big name directors.  Apparently, they still make time to work with deserving filmmakers who need a hand.  We remain curious to see the outcome.

Beware The Shortcut

Posted by bob in Films, News on July 31st, 2008

Shannon JardineShannon WoodwardThe Shortcut is the scary quick route in a small town but it’s avoided by the local kids since some people using the access point go missing.  A group of adults return to their hometown determined to learn what happens when one takes the shortcut. The thriller from Happy Madison productions just wrapped shooting in Regina, Canada and Fangoria’s set report indicates it was a happy time for one and all.

Leomax Entertainment coproduced the film and has been the primary source for low budget projects in the Saskatchewan province, providing plenty of work for the local acting population.

This production features Shannon Jardine, Andrew Seeley (Campus Confidential), Dave Franco (Bad Meat) and Shannon Woodward (The Riches).  It was written by Scott Sandler and Dan Hannon with Nicholaus Goossen (Grandma’s Boy) directing.

“Nicholaus certainly embraced the humor when I worked with him, but only where it was appropriate,” Jardine told the magazine about the level of humor versus horror.
