Supernatural Picked up for Fourth Go Round

SupernaturalThe CW announced on Monday that Supernatural will be back in the Fall for a fourth season. The series has built a strong fan base and with other series on the network showing their age, they need shows that can deliver consistent audiences.

No word yet on the charming Reaper but in defiance of all logic Smallville will be back for an eighth season. Michael Rosenbaum, who plays Lex Luthor, previously announced his intentions to leave the series after the current strike-shortened season. What will happen to the Clark/Lex duality has yet to be announced.

Supernatural meantime has spawned some wonderful novels and comic books from DC Comics and should be around for a while.

News Bits & Pieces

Alison LohmanWe recently reported that Ellen Page pulled out of Sam Raimi’s return to horror. Now we see that the underrated Alison Lohman will replace her. We’re still chuffed about this project.

Legendary one-sheet painter Drew Struzan bas been tapped by Guillermo del Toro to craft the poster for Hellboy II: The Golden Army.

Jim Marquand will direct episodes of George Lucas’ still-in-development Star Wars television series. He is the son of Return of the Jedi director Richard Marquand.

Speaking of Lucas, no surprise here that a new box set of the Indiana Jones trilogy will be released May 13, just before the fourth installment hits the big screen.

Speaking of Harrison Ford, his Crossing Over film has been scheduled by the Weinstein Company for August 22.

The live action Dragonball has been bumped from August until April 3, 2009.

The unnecessary remake of Escape to Witch Mountain, Race to Witch Mountain has added Ciaran Hinds (Stop Loss) and Alexander Ludwig (The Seeker: The Dark is Rising) to the cast which already features Dwayne Johnson (The Scorpion King) and AnnaSophia Robb (Jumper). The Andy Dickman film begins production this month.

New parents Move into House

Monica PotterMonica Potter (Along Came a Spider) and Tony Goldwyn (Ghost) will be playing the parents in the remake of Wes Craven’s classic Last House on the Left. Craven is producing the film with Dennis Iliadas directing.

The original, one of the first graphic horror films of the current generation, was released in 1972 with a No Name cast (Martin Kove of Karate Kid fame is about the only familiar name from the cast list) and became a template fro many imitators. By putting recognizable names in key roles already makes this an interesting project to follow.

NBC’s Fear Itself Details Released

Fear Itself will be a thirteen episode summer replacement series, hoping to imitate the success of a similar series, Masters of Horror, that played on Showtime last year. Recently, NBC released the names of several directors as well as some of the cast although the match-ups of star to helmer remain under wraps. The series is being produced on the cheap in Canada with production already underway, carefully supervised by Adam Goldworm, the series producer, repeating his Masters experience.

We can look forward to new thrills from John Landis (An American Werewolf in London), Darren Bousman ( Saw II-IV), Ronny Yu (Freddy vs. Jason), Brad Anderson (The Wire), Breck Eisner (Sahara), Mary Harron (American Psycho), Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator) and Ernest Dickerson (Heroes).

Horror scribes Richard Chizmar & Jonathon Schaech (Road House 2); Mick Garris (Riding the Bullet); Drew McWeeny & Scott Swan (Masters of Horror); Max Landis (Masters of Horror); and Matt Venne (White Noise 2: The Light), return for new stories for the series.

New writers include Joe Gangemi (Wind Chill), Dan Knauf (Carnivale), Steve Niles (Thirty Days of Night), Lem Dobbs (Dark City), Victor Salva (Jeepers Creepers) and Kelly Kennemer (Music Within).

Casting includes Brandon Routh (Superman Returns), Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men), Shiri Appleby (Charlie Wilson’s War), Cynthia Watros (Lost), Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight), John Billingsley (Enterprise), Russell Hornsby (Haunted), Pablo Schreiber (The Wire), Stephen Lee (Nash Bridges), Stephen R. Hart (Silent Hill), Jack Noseworthy (Judging Amy) and Larry Gilliard Jr. (The Wire).
