Plots are beginning to leak out of Hollywood about some of the films now shooting for 2009.
Crank 2: High Voltage, which will go before the cameras on April 28, will star Jason Statham (The Transporter) and Amy Smart (Peaceful Warrior) and will pit Chev Chelios against Hu Dong, a century old Chinese mobster. With a nod to
G.I. Joe, from director Stephen Sommers (The Mummy), is said to be an origin tale so we’ll learn secrets such as why Destro wears the full head mask and maybe even the enigmatic Snake Eyes’ story. The film has a terrific cast and it’s our 2009 guilty pleasure to anticipate.
Meantime, there some word already circulating that a third film spawned from Descent. Already, the second film is without its creator, Neil Marshall (Doomsday), so we’re not sure what to expect from Descent 2 let alone Descent 3. Marshall has endorsed Jon Harris, who makes his directorial debut, on the first sequel.
Starz will debut an unedited version of the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez double feature Grindhouse on March 31 at 9 p.m. Stock up on popcorn, caffeine and you’ll be in for a treat, one not available on DVD.
Sheri Moon (Grindhouse) will be seen next in Rob Zombie’s Tyrannosaurus Rex. She claims it won’t be a horror film but if humans and dinosaurs are going to be in the same jungle, there will be blood! The film will be released by Dimension Films in August 2009.
The Butcherhouse Chronicles get Told
Paramount Pictures, which has certainly been embracing the genre, has partnerd with Platinum Dunes to produce The Butcherhouse Chronicles, a haunted house tale. The script is from Michael Hidalgo (Coma) and will feature four teens who go exploring and uncover horrible secrets. Originally, Hidalgo told this story on the stage with a production seen at the 3rd Annual Summer Play Festival in New York City.

The Last Winter gets Graphic Treatment
The Last Winter, already destined for DVD, has been adapted into a graphic novel. The Image Comics release, out today, is 128 pages and retails for $12.99, adapted by director Larry Fassenden and Robert Leaver with art from Brahm Revel.
The movie, starring Ron Perlman (Hellboy), James Le Gros (Zodiac) and Connie Britton (24), is described as an eco-horror hybrid that takes place in Alaska and details what happens when an oil team comes to do advance field work and things begin to go wrong. If you haven’t heard of this one, don’t be surprised. It came out last September and grossed a mere $33,190.
The DVD will be released first as a Blockbuster exclusive on May 20 followed by a general release from Genius Entertainment on July 29.
